Offering a fusion of R&B, jazz and hip-hop sounds, Warren's fourth album delivers crisp and powerful lyrics against mellow beats, as only the 'G' can. Industry icon George Clinton and rap veterans, Snoop, Dre and Nate Dogg, add to the flavor of the album, promising to perhaps make Return of the Regulator, Warren's best yet. BlackVoices.com recently chatted with Warren G about his latest contribution to the hip-hop world and the future of the G-Funk Era.

BV: Is the term G-Funk more related to the sound of your music or you as an individual?

Warren G: It has to do with the sound of the music and me as an individual. Like the 'Dogg Pound,' or 'Organized Noise', this is my clique. This is my branch of the funk and everyone that I've been involved with since the beginning is a part of making it G-Funk.

BV: You've been known to use a live band in the studio, rather than computerized music. How does this affect your sound?

Warren G: It sets the tone. I could make 'gangsta, gangsta, gangsta' but anyone could do that . Live music adds something that's hard to explain. It's almost like magic and it creates a good edge to the overall sound.

BV: How do you respond to those who said it couldn't be done?

Warren G: I laugh. A lot of people doubt Warren G, even those around me sometimes doubt. But I play to win each and every time. I just stay Warren G. I don't change for anyone.

BV: On 'Yo Sassy Ways' (featuring Snoop Dogg and Nate Dogg) you talk about a woman with her own platinum rings. How can you determine if a woman is trying to be down with you or just trying to be with 'Warren G'?

Warren G: You can tell when someone is down with you and when they're not. So we're saying that, every now and then, we don't mind a woman who has her own platinum ring, her own Benz, you know? Take ME out to dinner, sometimes. [laughs]

BV: Not long ago,you dealt with the passing of your mother in which 'Keepin' it Strong' (featuring El Debarge) pays tribute. How has that experience impacted your music or the message in your lyrics?

Warren G: On that particular song, my message is different because I took the time to let people know what I went through. Some of the talk shows show so many people feuding with their parents and disrespecting them. But you need to love your parents because they gave you life and they will be your guide through life.

BV: What's the secret to your longevity?

Warren G: I maintain my status by creating great music. People love what I do. That's why I'm still able to do records, and this is my fourth. I'm trying to be like Ron Isley or James Brown. They've got a gang of records.

BV: If you weren't in hip-hop, where would you be?

Warren G: On a football field somewhere. That was always my sport and if I wasn't doing this, I'd definitely be somewhere holding it down on the football field. No doubt.

BV: Where can your fans catch you next?

Warren G: I'll be kicking off a promotional tour in Kansas City, followed by Nebraska, then Minneapolis, Indiana, Detroit and Chicago. I'm gonna' rock the house. If fans want to know dates and times, they can log on to Warreng.com or go onto the Universal Records website and go to Warren G.

BV: Who or what do you credit as your inspiration?

Warren G: My spirit, my family, my friends; all of that. When I was young, I was kind of rough but I realized and I learned to enjoy life because it's short. And I want to have fun. I want to be successful. I want to be set-up right so that my kids and their kids can keep moving and be successful, even when I'm gone.

Actually the interview was made on 27 Feb. 2002, so it's pretty old. Plus a lot of sites connected to this board reported it, and there's a link in the official Warren G site too. Next time, please add the source, thanx.
