Hi. This is the first time i post here. NimaDPG gave me the link of this board, saying that it's the best one. I hope i'm welcome here.
I've just finished to read the italian release of the infamous book of Iceberg Slim called "Mama Black Widow". It's a wonderful book, so i suggest it to you all.
If you dont know Iceberg Slim (dont you read books? lol!), he was considered for more than 25 years like the best black pimp of the United States. He was born in 1918, i think in Chicago. BTW he grew up in Chicago for sure. Then he moved to California and, while he was in jail (i think he was been arrested for a rape case), at the age of 42, he started to write books. After his death in 1992, he was universally recognized as one of the best black "ghetto" writers ever, if you didnt know (he sold like 6 millions of books!!!!). He wrote books like "Trick Baby" (Universal made a movie, directed by Larry Yust in 1973, inspired by this book), this great "Black Mama" and another one called "Pimp".
I posted this infos to share my feelings about this book (it's really good!) and because i've read that Ice-T and Ice Cube took their nicknames from this man.
I remember i saw some clips of this man at a duch site (
www.maasmedia.net
), but they have removed them. They had 2 clips of Iceberg and one of Ice-T paying his tribute to the man.
Another last information related to Ice Cube and Iceberg is that Bill Duke is working on a movie inspired by Iceberg's biography called "Pimp" and that Ice Cube will play the role of Iceberg in the movie.
Check his books if you like to read, i suggest it to you all.

Welcome to the board eastsidalbcc. I'm halfway through reading Pimp right now, I think it's a good book, it's a good insight into people, their strengths and weaknesses, especially how weakness is preyed upon. And it has some shit like "gorilla pimpin'" and puttin hoes out on the track that I've never paid close attention to in lyrics.
BTW, I thought Ice Cube got his name from his older brother?

BTW, I thought Ice Cube got his name from his older brother?
"There have been rumors that a film based on Pimp is now in production, with both Ice-T and Ice Cube vying for the leading role. By the way, both "Ices" cite Iceberg Slim as an early inspiration, and paid homage to him by adopting his name. UPDATE: It looks like Ice Cube has gotten the part for the upcoming film, check out this article from MTVasia, though since this is dated May 2000, the production may have been postponed."
I hope this is a enought as a reply. The source is this site located at:
http://www.popsubculture.com/pop/bio_project/iceberg_slim.html
Oh, and those are some quotes from the article of MTVAsia.
The deals seem to be coming fast and furious these days for Ice Cube, as the rapper is in talks to star in a film based on Robert "Iceberg Slim" Beck, an infamous Harlem pimp in the 1940s and '50s.
Ice Cube will portray Beck in the "Pimp" film, which is based upon his 1969 autobiography "Pimp: The Story Of My Life" and is being produced by Fine Line Features. Rob Weiss and Bruce Rubenstein have collaborated on the screenplay, and Bill Duke ("Hoodlum," "Sister Act 2") has been approached to direct the film, according to "The Hollywood Reporter". Cube will likely start work on "Pimp" in the fall, right after shooting another pending film project, John Carpenter's "Ghost Of Mars," in the summer with co-star Courtney Love. -- David Basham (MTV.com)
Those are the original versions of Iceberg's books. They rare, but Amazon.com got the re-released versions:

Other interesting quotes from the same site:
Ice T : The rapper / actor - an early album was called: The Iceberg/Freedom Of Speech...Just Watch What You Say, reputedly named in part as a tribute to Iceberg Slim. Ice-T used the 'ice' in his name as an homage to the pimp turned author.
Ice Cube : The other rapper / actor / director, his name, too derived as an homage to Robert Beck's nom de crime.
This is a pic of the Ice-T album:
