What were the positive shows they used to have?

Teen Summit - Show back in the 1990's where Ananda Lewis came from before she went to MTV.

BET News - News show that showed many different things goin on in the nation, and most of it was black-related issues that probably wouldn't be seen on the regular news

BET Tonight with Tavis Smiley - Tavis Smiley would interview different blacks for many different reasons, but all of the interviews would be serious and had a positive vibe. He was the first that I know to bring DJ Quik and MC Eiht together publically, and he had them both on there talkin to each other and talkin about doin a song together. However, they fired him over some completely bullshit reasons, and most people think it's because Viacom took over.

BET Tonight with Ed Gordon - Similar to how it was with Tavis Smiley, but they ended it as well.

Lead Story - Had a similar setup to "Outside the lines" on ESPN, and talked about different stories that were most relevant at the time to blacks. They would interview people involved with situations, and have panel discussions.

BET Jazz - They used to show Jazz every night, and we all know Jazz as an art form is much more positive and culturally rich than Hip Hop will ever be

So yeah...along with those shows, the regular video shows they had such as Carribean Rhythms and Video Soul just had a much more mature and positive vibe to them than most of what they show now. College Hill basically tries to cancel out everything that was achieved on shows like Teen Summit.

Thanks, looks like a lot of good shows.  Tavis Smiley at least comes out on PBS now, it's pretty good

I've never watched BET, and I never will.  I've never been flipping through the channels and found 1 show on there that looked even mildly appealing to me.  Don't take it personal.  I also don't watch ESPN because I'm not into sports.

I am just curious if a lot of people who aren't black watch BET. In High School, most of the white people seemed to think it was racist and they were like "Would you be mad if they started White Entertainment TV?" and I was like no, but I'd laugh because it would be called WET. But I have heard a few white guys since I have been in college say that they saw this n that on BET, and I had no idea that they watched it.

If you do or don't, how do you feel about it? Personally, most adults and many blacks in their 20s seem to think it is very stereotypical, and many of us are ashamed to watch some of the shows and videos they watch. We are also mad that they cancelled all the positive shows that they used to have back in the 90s and early 2000's.

I'm white, I used to watch BET as much as anything.  That has changed.  For the last couple years I haven't even had a TV up in my apartment.  Islam has taught me that this life is too short to waste time watching other peoples lives.

Anyway, I grew up on BET in jr. high and highschool I always watched rap city.  You know how we get nostalgic about the old school, back then it seemed it was more about the music then about the bling or the booty shaking.  Infact, there's too much ass in the video's today to really even concentrate on the music, the music actually ends up becoming an afterthought.

I also used to watch BET Tonight when Tavis Smiley was hosting it and it educated me to alot of things I may not have paid attention to at the time.  I'd say it broadened my perspective when I was younger.

None of that matters now though, Robert Johnson sold the company out a few years ago.  The company isn't even owned by black people, Robert Johnson sold it to whites.  He's a trader to his race.  Now you see one the results of his desicion has been the daily degradation of black women on BET.  All it is now is a soft porn network.

BET is BLACK EXPLOITATION TELEVISION.

Don't even get me started with College Hill. >:( To any white people on this forum: That's got to be the stupidest and most demeaning portrayal of Black people I've ever seen on BET.

How is he a traitor? He sold his company, it's not like you don't see people do that every week. Whoever he sold it to (those fags at Viacom) should be the ones that recieve the blame.

Do you realize how ridiculous that sounds?  Calling it Black Entertainment Television and it's owned by whites?  Black people don't own their own television station, and they don't even own the gas station at the corner of all black nieghborhoods.

With all the problems facing black people, they had an oppurtunity to use media to their advantage.  They had their own television station in which they could have aired programming that would have been beneficial to their people.  They could have used it as a forum for uplifting the mentality of their people and advertising the more virtuous attributes of their community.  Now, you see it's only being used as a soft porn network; they are pimpin their black women.

I agree with everything you said. BET is a sell out, but you didn't answer my question. How is Robert Johnson a traitor?

That's what he does. He's a business man. Him selling it was just an indirect action that led to what BET is today.

What are you talking about?  "That's what he does".    So if an Italian Mobster takes one of your family members hostage and charges ransom for her.  It's all good because "That's what he does".

That's not a sufficient excuse for selling out your people.  He was already a rich and successful business man, he didn't have to sell BET to Viacom.  And don't say "indirect" either; since he sold the network, they got rid of Tavis Smiley, BET Tonight, Teen Summit (Their intellectual programming) and instead they added more programs that exploit their race as being nothing but materialistic, ignorant, sex-objects.

I agree for the most part....he might be a business man, but if you wanna say it like that, then that means he's just living up to the stereotypes of a business man, meaning he has no ethics or values. He definitely had enough money, and he could have sold it to a group of black investors or anyone else, even if he didn't make as much money. It just shows that he values money a lot more than the impact and effect that what he created has and will have on the black youth. I wouldn't put ALL the blame on him, but he should have known that it would happen like it did.
