NEWARK, N.J. -- Harassment Detailed In N.J. State Police

One female state trooper said she found derogatory notes, poems and fliers in her locker referring to her weight and sexual orientation, then discovered her personal car, locker and uniforms had been damaged.

Another said she got a box of chocolates on Valentine's Day with a card ridiculing her in vulgar sexual terms, before a co-worker fondled her buttocks. A Latino trooper said he was threatened with homosexual rape, and an African-American trooper was told he should have a "black-sounding" nickname and accused of having smoked marijuana because he grew up in the ghetto.

--Trooper Kimberly Zollitsch complained of having derogatory pictures, poems and fliers posted around the station poking fun at her appearance and perceived sexual orientation. She said the tires on her personal car were slashed and her locker vandalized. She filed a sexual harassment lawsuit in 1999, and has since left the force.

--Trooper John Oliva claimed he was targeted for reprisal by colleagues after speaking out against racial profiling. The report noted that before Oliva committed suicide in October 2002, he was notified by state police brass that he himself was found to have engaged in racial profiling, and was given the opportunity to resign from the force.

--Trooper Amy Johnson claimed that on Valentine's Day 1992 someone gave her a box of chocolates with a card that read, "This cards fits you," and used a vulgar term for female genitalia. She also accused a co-worker of fondling her buttocks. She retired on a disability pension in 1999.

--Trooper Christopher Bastos claimed other troopers told him he was only hired because he is Latino. He said one co-worker threatened to rape him, failed to stop another trooper from watching pornography on the barracks' television and called black troopers "Busta Rhymes," "Snoop Dog," "Shaft" and "Magilla Gorilla." Bastos also has left the force.

"One day Alice came to a fork in the road and saw a Cheshire cat in a tree. "Which road do I take?" she asked. "Where do you want to go?" was his response. "I don't know," Alice answered. "Then," said the cat, "it doesn't matter."
