New Busta Rhymes Interview w/ Tim Westwood: Sneak Preview for "The Big Bang"

BUSTA RHYMES – he’s a rap superstar and one of the greatest of all time.

Tremendous charisma, incredible energy and one of the most dynamic stage show performers in the history of hip-hop. He makes classic hits – some of the biggest records every year are Busta’s. Heavy hit, after heavy hit after heavy hit.


SFTW’s Radio 1 man in the know, TIM WESTWOOD, has a sneak preview of The Big Bang and meets the larger-than-life star to talk hip-hop.

AND here’s what Busta had to say  . . .

TW: What does your new album represent to you man, at your stage in your career, your standing in the game?

BR: To me it means everything. It’s my most flawless project. It captures the time line of what hip-hop used to be in the golden era days, all the way to what it needs to feel like in the current day.

TW: Define golden era a bit more.

BR: It’s when hip-hop felt so much better. There was a lot more creative approaches going on that exemplified how hip-hop was supposed to feel. And I think the time frame that best represents what the golden era in hip-hop was, was around the early ’80s up until it started to surface from the underground around the mid ’90s. 1999 was probably the last year that I can honestly say that the golden era was really prominent. That was one of the last years that hip-hop really felt like quality music. I’m not saying dudes ain’t doing their thing nowadays, it’s just obvious it’s not being done in the same way.

TW: Yo, I entirely agree with you on that man.

BR: You know Tim — you were part of that whole s*** man.

TW: You always show mad love to the UK. You’ve always invested time and energy to the UK man and the whole UK audience.

BR: Well I had a chance to really get a different kind of appreciation for the UK. When I was small my mother sent me out to live in the UK for four to six months. I went to school in England too. Stuff like that was all a part of my understanding and appreciation to really connect with people there. I used to live in Blackpool, Preston and Morecambe. When I was 12 me and my younger brother used to breakdance at clubs. Because we were such a little phenomenon, clubs used to want us to come and perform.

THE Big Bang is incredible s*** — that incredible, out-of-control phenomenal-type s*** like a testament of what the truth is supposed to feel like in hip-hop. It’s a real incredible project and it’s time for the world to know what Busta’s been cooking all these years while he’s been quiet.

Blessed with production from Dr Dre, Jay Dee, DJ Scratch, Timbaland, Swizz Beatz, Scott Storch, Sha Money XL, Mr. "Kon Artist" Porter & Green Lantern. Plus guest appearances from Nas, Eminem, Dr. Dre, Raekwon, Marsha from Floetry, Missy Elliott, the late great Rick James, the late great Ol' Dirty Bastard and music legend Stevie Wonder!

You Can’t Hold The Torch featuring Q-Tip from A Tribe Called Quest and produced by the late J Dilla (R.I.P.) is a statement towards the new dudes rhyming in the game, letting them know they’ve got a responsibility to step up their creative approach and what they’re contributing to hip-hop.

Imagine, featuring Dr Dre spitting a hot 24. The song is saying what if hip-hop never existed, what would we be doing? Makes you understand how blessed we are and that it’s like some artists abuse this blessing and privilege.

Touch It has had a snowball effect — it just got big in the street, got crazy in the club and crazy on the radio. With Swizz Beatz on production, this is hip-hop in its rawest form — the song is just drums, a hard kick, a sneer and Busta spitting.

This is the album hip-hop has been waiting for. Busta proves he is as relevant today as the newest MC.
