" I understand that youngbloods need role models and heroes, but i have to ask myself-who died and made me the great black hope?  i'm a nigger from long beach, california, who's done a lot of things wrong and a couple things right.  So now, when i rap, i rap for one person-Snoop Dogg.  The nigger's been through a lot and he knows a thing or two, and iff you ask him, he'll tell you:
Increase the peace.
Spread the music.
Elevate and educate.
Word: it starts with you and me.

-Snoop Dogg, from the book THA DOGGFATHER

That quote from his book is one of the best quotes I ever read... the other quote from the book that i like is

I Tell The Truth and I Know What I'm Talking About.
Thats Why I'm A Threat

Snoop spits some real stuff and a lot of Westcoast fans dont see it. They look at the music too hard and wonder why it's not up to par with Doggystyle, but in it's own way it exceeds everything Doggystyle was and ever will be. I analyze Snoop's stuff like most people anazlyze what 2pac was. No one knew the impact 2pac had until he was finally gone. I look at the impact Snoop has now and wonder why no one sees it. I think when Snoop finally does leave us, the impact will show.

As for Slickk, keep your head up... I remember letting a tear go when I heard No Back Trackin... it was like a release or something. I'm a fan... always will be, I guess that's what seperates me from the rest.

You are right on BpG.  My favorite way to listen to Snoop is by myself with headphones.  No distractions that way, you can focus better on the music and what he's actually saying.  It always puts me in a good mood.

I had a class last semester on the Bible, and for my final project I did a 14 page paper on Snoop Dogg, and the spirituality of his music.  I got an A too!

Yeah, Snoop is better through headphones, cause he talks in the background in addition to the rap, and you'll miss a whole lot of details if you don't hear the adlibs in the background.

Sup, I thought i'd drop my wisdom on this, lol.  Snoop's true wisdom/intelligence isn't that he thinks deep, everybody thinks deep.  I do, you do, everyone does.  But Snoop has the NUTS to tell it like it is, he has the nuts to talk about it in his music.  Most people don't do that.. and usually Snoop doesn't.  Usually, he's on some party/gangsta/pimp stuff.  But everyonce in a while, he does something meaninful.  The last meal was full of it.  That was a good album, you're right, he was a lot better lyrically on it, it was deeper... especially "Yall Gon Miss Me".  That's not a statement to his 'deepness' though, everybody's that deep, he's just got the balls to make Real music about Real things.  He don't see the world any better or different than most guys his age, he just realizes that it's important, and something to talk about.

It's a shame, but Rap's really BEHIND in that department.  Rap features the most lyrics of any music genre (usually there's what, 100 lines or so per song, or more?)  Rock especially, and even country music has always been more real than Rap, even with only a dozen lines per song or so.  For me, when I was BPG's age, it was the Beatles that did it for me... like in 1967, The queen asked the Beatles to be part of a worldwide musical broadcast, to perform live.  Well, when the cameras cut on the beatles live in their studio @ Abbey Road, instead of the mop top "Hold my Hand" beatles, they were all sitting there with peace signs and flowers all around them, and performed their new song, live, "All You Need Is Love".

There's nothin' you can do that can't be done
Nothin' you can sing that can't be sung
Nothing you can say, but you can learn how to play the game...  it's easy

Nothing you can make that can't be made
No one you can save that can't be saved,
Nothing you can do, but you can learn how to be  you in time, it's easy

All you need is love, ... all you need is love... all you need is love, love, love is all you need.

At the end of the song, Paul screams "She loves you, yeah, yeah yeah... She loves you, yeah, yeah, yeah" Making fun of their earlier stupid pop songs, and signifying that they were beginning to write REAL music, about REAL things.

Or take the band Our lady Peace, who's pretty big today.

Walked around my good intentions, and found that there were none
I blamed my father for the wasted years we hardly talked
I never thought I would forget this thing, then a phonecall made me realize 'i'm wrong'.
And If I don't make it, know that, I loved you all along
Just like sunny days that we've all become
We're all dumb and jaded, and I hope to god I figure out what's wrong

Or Garth Brooks, biggest country singer ever.

This ain't comin' from no prophet
Just an ordinary man
When I close my eyes I see
The way this world shall be
When we all walk hand in hand

When the last child cries for a crust of bread
When the last man dies for just words that he said
When there's shelter over the poorest head
We shall be free

When the last thing we notice is the color of skin
And the first thing we look for is the beauty within
When the skies and the oceans are clean again
Then we shall be free

We shall be free
We shall be free
Stand straight, walk proud
'Cause we shall be free
When we're free to love anyone we choose
When this world's big enough for all different views
When we all can worship from our own kind of pew
Then we shall be free
We shall be free

Or Kurt Cobain, who was my first girlfriend's saving grace.  She probably would have killed herself if it wasn't for his music.

I wish I was like you
Easily amused
Find my nest of salt
Everything is my fault
I'll take all the blame
Aqua seafoam shame
Sunburn with freezeburn
Choking on the ashes of her enemy
All alone is all we are

or

And I forget, just why I taste, oh yeah, I guess it makes me smile, She found it hard, it's hard to find.. oh well, whatever, nevermind

Geniusly written line about Cobain's drug addiction to heroin (tasting is when you inject heroin under your skin and don't mainline it), and then about how he later addicted his wife to heroin.

So, my point is, other genre's have been doing it forever, and i'm glad to see people like Snoop who make Rap a legitimate musical form.

Definetly Trauma... I'm not trying to say Snoop is the only one that does it, and I'm not trying to make Snoop king for that either... it's just that he does say it and I respect him for that... so when people start to yell sellout and  commercial, I just laugh because they obviously don't see what  music is really about... it's not about flossing your stuff, it's about expressing your views, expressing ideas and Snoop is starting to do that and I respect his music a lot more now than I have ever...

I agree, he's much more respectable now.  That takes more talent, In my opinion.  If he could ever mix his old flow, with his new lyrics, watch out.  He does sometimes.

lol fucking trauma said everythig i was going to say ....lol i dunno i guess that's why i relate more to you the most on this board cuz we can see eye to eye musically

anyway to add to every thing big bpg said and trauma

it's not like we're saying this 'becuase we're rabid snoop dick riders'....just about every one whose cool with snoop in real life like kurupt have said that they look up to him spiritually

snoop's real ,i'm not talking about being street gang bang shoot em up real, i'm talking about emotionally and spiritually real, even the realist rapper pac said this about snoop

if you ever watched snoop's diary on mtv he spit some real shit about life "growing old is cool", "it's cool to grow old, the older you get the wiser you grow and  you become spirtually better", man that some real shit

but at the same time like trauma said snoop's not some God or anything , he has deep thoughts like anyone else but has the balls to say it what's on his mind and incorperate them into his music

but what trauma hit right on the HEAD! was about rap's substance lyrically. Rap songs contain the most lyrics ot of any genre, yet (wether underground or mainstream) is more times than not shallow, over macho, sexist, or uninspired with just free association. Rock and Country have always been realer than rap, and is where rap needs to go, which snoop seems to be headed with his solo albums now, and what pac layed the blue print for.

just to add to the lyrics thing

Metallica "fade to black"

"life it seems , will fade away
drifting further every day
getting lost within myself
nothing matters no one else
i have lost the will to live
simply nothing more to give
there is nothing left for me
need the end to set me free"

c'mon who HASN'T felt like that, IMO tha's one of the most well crafted and lyrically deep songs i've seen in song format

i would say more but damn trauma said every thing i wanted to lol
