Bay Area Music Scene Resurges with Hyphy Movement
BET covers the emerging artists and lifestyle of Bay Area Hip Hop scene in week long series.

Oakland, CA (PRWEB) May 14, 2006 -- “Hyphy is the like the rebirth of hip hop,” proclaims BET Rap City’s host, Madd Links, when the network captured three days of footage in the Bay Area to document this pop culture. Hyphy—which originated in Oakland—has hit the national scene and enticed mainstream media to document the phenomenon. BET created a weeklong series to document this movement. Rap City’s “Hyphy Week” series will air daily at 5:00 pm PDT during the week of May 22, 2006.

Rebirth may be understatement. “Hyphy promises to be more like the ‘second coming’ of the glory days of Bay Area music artists,” stated Charles Johnson of Oakland’s Young Lion Entertainment. It has been more than a decade since hip hop dominants like MC Hammer, The Luniz, Digital Underground and E-40, put the Bay Area music scene on the map. Hyphy has erected a new stage for unique and talented artists like Oakland native Mistah F.A.B, rap’s version of the Grateful Dead — Hieroglyphics Crew, The Federation, and the ageless Too Short. The country will have the opportunity to catch a glimpse and experience the movement through BET next week.

The BET series covers the past, present, and future of Bay Area Hip Hop. The series opens Monday’s with Too Short—a pioneer Oakland Rapper who went from slanging tapes on the corner to platinum sales—and concludes on Saturday with the Bay Area’s TOP 10 COUNTDOWN: The schedule is as follows: Monday 5/22/06 Too Short – A Day in the Life, Tuesday 5/23/06 Hyphy – A subculture of Hip Hop, Wednesday 5/24/06 E-40 – His second wind, Thursday 5/25/06 Hieroglyphics & Davey D – The Past, Present, & Future, Friday 5/26/06 Bay Area – The Road Map, and Saturday 5/27/06 Top 10 Countdown.

The coordination and planning of “Hyphy Week” is the work of Supervising Producer of BET’s Rap City, Matt Smith, BET Rap City’s host, Madd Links, Rap City Producer Malik Buie, and Coordinating Producer Charles Johnson. The series is highly informative and offers insight to yet another dynamic chapter of Hip Hop Music.

I still don't see how Hyphy is really such a big movement.  There ain't a lotta people bumping "Tell Me When To Go" anymore, and there don't seem to be any other Hyphy rappers scoring big hits, either.  Maybe Too $hort will be the next to break out doing the Hyphy shit, but I doubt it.

To me "movements" start out local. It is HUGE in the Bay right now, been bubbling for a few years, and now the nation is taking notice. The reason that there havent been many big hits is because video & radio do not want to break new artists unless they have a mainstream backing. 40 already had outlets, so did Too Short. Now, it will be Keak since hes been on TV, and currently has 3 videos in regular rotation on MTV Jams. I agree with the culture being a little gay and corny, and the fans really make it look bad, but for the most part, current Bay Area album are serious records with a hyphy track or 2. I do believe it will blow becuase of the rising attention ( BET specials, Keak rotation, E-40 on the Lil Jon video, plus TMWTG is still creeping up the 106&Park countdown ), and also becuase the industry is always looking for the next big, new thing. And that is the hyphy movement. Once it really explodes, I believe that different types of music from the Bay will have more doors open to them.

Yeah...and with "movements", it's not always about how good or quality the music is, because people just want something new and fresh, along with the fact that almost anything will get love if it gets played a lot. I like a lot of the music, even though it's not much substance to it, it's just fun music with a lotta energy to it. Many people from the bay are mad at it because they feel people wiwll ONLY look to the bay for hyphy, the same way most people only look to the south for crunk music. But they have to realize that the groups who aren't doin hyphy are just not going to get much of a chance right now unless their style is completely different from everything else out.

thats also true, but there are many accomplished southern rappers that dont use much of the crunk style like Outkast, Goodie Mob, Trick Daddy, Eightball & MJG, etc. And right now, people across the country do feel that the bay is all hyphy, but once that style makes its mark and the region is given the spotlight artists like San Quinn, The Team, Turf Talk, Ya Boy, etc. will have a better chance at getting their music across the nation

It's alright I guess. I don't see how people consider it a movement yet or comparing it to crunk (in terms of its impact). It has yet to really blow up. E-40 is the only artist to get major play outside of Cali. When a new artist drops a hit an starts selling, then ask me this again.
