Daz Dillinger, Snoop and Kurupt support The Game

Though Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, and 2Pac may have stolen the spotlight, tha Dogg Pound played an important role in the success of Suge Knight's Death Row empire before the duo moved on to solo careers. Dogg Pound members Daz Dillinger and Kurupt aided in the success of the both Dr. Dre's The Chronic (1992) and Snoop Dogg's Doggystyle (1993) before finally getting the chance to work on their own album, Dogg Food (1995).

Unfortunately, the duo's lack of substantial commercial success and the subsequent downfall of Death Row brought about tha Dogg Pound's demise at the end of the '90s, and Daz and Kurupt decided to concentrate on their respective solo careers.

Although, Daz is preparing to release his first major album since "Revenge, Retaliation, & Get Back", the two long-time friends have reunited once again with Snoop Dogg to bring another DPG album, along with some other projects that are addressed in this interview.

Mixtapetalk.com: How does it feel being back in the studio with Kurupt?

Daz: It's been beautiful. I have Kurupt right here with me.

Kurupt: What's the deal?

Mixtapetalk.com: Nothing much. So, how does it feel for the two of you to be back together?

Daz: It's the greatest thing. We been working at this for a long time, and being back together - we just making it happen. We want people to listen to the records and tell us what they think about the Dogg Pound being back together.

Mixtapetalk.com: How does "So So Gangsta" differ from the previous albums? With you being in the ATL can we expect for more South artists to make appearances?

Daz: Nah, the only South artist on the album is Rick Ross. [The album] is more South and West Coast. It has bass in it, and that's all that counts.

Mixtapetalk.com: So basically, with the album you're sticking with the same formula.

Daz: Yeah, the same formula that got us here. That's like if you beat someone up the first time, you can beat them up again.

Mixtapetalk.com: As an artist, you rather put out an independent album than a mixtape. However, a lot of artists been putting out mixtapes to introduce us to their album, how do you feel about that?

Daz: That's for the new artists. They're not making any money. The DJ is making the money, and the artist is going to sit at home and listen to someone tell them how tight the tape was. I be going into a record store and seeing their real album next to a mixtape album in best buy. So, everybody be like "Daz do my mixtape", man you have to pay me to do your mixtape, because y'all about to make some money off of this. I just don't do mixtapes. I put my own independent album out, and that's a mixtape, go get it.

Mixtapetalk.com: Okay, but you have two of the top West Coast DJs in your camp - DJ Warrior and Strong, what can we expect from them?

Daz: We messing with them right now and doing a mixtape. That's the only one we're doing a mixtape with though.

Mixtapetalk.com: So, that's very exclusive.

Daz: Daz: Yeah, everyone else has to pay. Give me 2 dollars a unit.

Daz: I bet you the Djs are pulling up fresher than the muthafucka that made the record.

Daz: Nah, but we're just having fun. Whoever is down with making money with us we're down with it.

Kurupt: See, it's nothing we can really say until people get the music, start banging out to it, and enjoying themselves to that DPG gangsta sh*t. Daz has his solo album coming " So So Gangsta", and a lot of people have questions about is it going to be South or going to be that, but hip-hop is universal. There is no South, West, East, North, or whatever. It's all about putting it together, and that's what the West Coast is about right now.

Jermaine Dupri is an icon of music and business, and he's about to take Daz to another level, as an artist himself. Just like Snoopy is doing with me as a solo artist. We're just going to plug you up with some of this new millennium gangsta sh*t we have.



Mixtapetalk.com: Why was the move from the West Coast to the ATL necessary?

Kurupt: We like the ATL. I moved out there first - me and Tina - and then Daz came out there. It's a great place to live and raise your kids. It's also cracking out there business wise. So, it's not just about the music and the industry, it's about your grown man thing - being an adult, having a nice home of your own…

Daz: That ain't for rent.

Kurupt: Yeah, that ain't for rent. So, it's not all about music …

Daz: Then the clubs stay open longer too.

Kurupt: Exactly. At 2 in the morning when we're done recording the party just starting.

Mixtapetalk.com: What else can we expect from DPG?

Daz: Besides The Dogg Pound that comes out June 27th, we have Kurupt: Yo Gotti solo independent album that drops June 20th. We're just trying to stay busy and do it big.

Kurupt: We have a group coming out from the West Coast called YA, which Daz is overseeing the project. We also have my little brother Roscoe that Daz is putting under his wing and producing him as well. We're just keeping it moving. We have a couple people out there in Memphis to. So, we just want to put some bomb music together, put it out there, and y'all have a ball. Make babies like you use to do.

Mixtapetalk.com: What do you think about everyone saying: The Game put the West Coast back on the map?

Kurupt: I agree. I like that. I think the Game, Snoop, and the Dogg Pound movement is brining the West Coast back, but Game definitely was a major piece of that. Whether people recognize it or not, the real is the real. I like Game. I think he's hot. Snoop like him, Daz like him, and he did a lot for the West Coast with Dr. Dre. I even give 50 cent credit, because he put his foot in it.

Mixtapetalk.com: So, can we expect DPG and The Game to get together any time soon?

Kurupt: We've done some things with Game, but that's what the West Coast is about right now. We're supporting each other. The main thing is that we stay high and dry from the bullsh*t. Every one knows if you fu*k with us, you're fu*kin' with us, and we're not into all that bullsh*t, and that's what they do.

Mixtapetalk.com: Why now? DPG has been gone for a minute, why is this the right time?

Daz: well, we really ain't went anywhere. It's just the business part. I been chillin' where I can count my money and having a ball.

kurupt: And I've been going crazy …

Kurupt: Kurupt: we just had been going through our individual things. One thing, as a man you have to find who you are, and all of us had to do that.

Seriously who cares where they live if creativity is better in Atl and they are happy there then im all for it becuasse besides a couple of good tracks kurupt or Daz have not brought muc to the Game and the Westcoast in years.

I am a big fan of Game, but am really feelin' what Daz and Kurupt are doing.  Snoop, Daz, Kurupt and Game working together would be great.

Cali Iz Active is coming soon, right?  Does that have a joint with game on it?  I am also hearing that Kurupts album is out soon as is Daz's
