Opinions on The Da Vinci Code (the movie)?
« on: May 19, 2006, 11:26:43 AM »
I went to see it on the day it came out (May 17th here in Belgium) and let me put it like this: I advise people to read the book first before watching the movie, otherwise you'll come out the theatre "wtf is all the hype about?!". Also, don't go watching it with very high expectations (like I did).

The book itself is good (well, according to others it's not, but that's just a matter of taste), but the movie feels kinda watered-down. Also, some scenes are rather hard to undertand/to follow if you haven't read the book.

The acting by Hanks & Reno was on point, but I was a bit disappointed by Tautou.

As far as the score goes (by Hans Zimmer), I was disappointed as well. A lot of the music sounded a bit corny/cheesy.

I think the main reason why this movie has disappointed me (and MANY other people) is because the big bosses at Sony Pictures probably didn't allow Ron Howard to take any risks with the movie and that they told him to go for a simple approach (the camera-work is very basic too btw) and to have a score that the mainstream audience will appreciate.

Never read the book. The movie wasn;t the most exciting thing and it dragged a little. The acting was terrible, even Tom Hanks. It was like a live action reading.I found it very interesting though. I might give the book a read.

I enjoyed the movie once i started watching it as a film and not thinking "i didnt imagine it that way". Reading the book before hand definatly made me enjoy the movie less. overall i thought it was good thouigh.

langdon was a homo in this movie and lol at him using a cell phone to find the clue instead of going to the library. books > movies. after the first 15 minutes of watching i realised the movie was going to suck for the following 2 hours. tom hanks was a shitty robert langdon.

Actually I thought that Tom Hanks did a pretty good job playing Robert Langdon's role. I can't really think of another actor who would fit Langdon's description. Clooney? Russel Crowe? Personally, I don't see them playing that character. Can't really explain it.

Ian McKellen was great though!

And yeah, they left out a whole lot of bookscenes (like the one you mentioned, Dosia) which is disappointing because they're very good, but it's understandable at the same time, 'cause otherwise the movie would've been more than 3 hours or something...

Again, I recommend reading the book...it doesn't matter if you've already seen the movie and were disappointed by it. The book's a whole lot better.

yeah i didnt like the mobile bit or when they turned up at his book signing, i dont know why they changed those two bits from what was in the book.

When dan Brown is describing Langdon in the book, it says "sort of like Harrison Ford with a tweed jacket". Hence the comparison...

And yeah, the book-signing scene was weird, considering the bookscene was a lot better (Langdon waking up in the Ritz hotel). But I guess they would've had trouble with all the flashbacks to his speech & his hotel room back & forth...

Yeah, Ian Mckellan was gangsta in that movie. Best actor in the movie IMO.
