Dre's first "2001" style beat?
« on: May 30, 2006, 05:45:16 PM »
I'm listening to Kurupt's "Ask Yourself A Question" joint, and I got to thinking...wasn't this the first track that introduced Dre's new style, which is often referred to as the "2001 style"?

The drums and bass sound like signature "2001", as does the main loop and then the melodic outro...this probably was the first taste of his new production style, since this came out in late 1998 and the "2001" sound came into play in '99.

I don't think ask yourself a question sounds anything like any beat on 2001.  but then again I rarely ever listen to that song, but I just gave it a listen and I can kinda see some resemblance.  Mostly the bass, and some other shit that I can't even describe.

well "Just Dippin" and "B Please" were made by Dre when he was recording for 2001 I think?  I could be wrong, I think I remember hearing that.

Yup, it was "Ask Yourself A Question".  Just before that you had joints like "Phone Tap", "Nas Is Coming" and "Been There Done That"

Dre said in a interview that he made a grip of tracks for 2001. So alot of the tracks on Topp Dogg were 2001 leftovers. The track with Eminem, Sticky Fingaz and RBX on Em's 2nd one was a leftover too. Buck Em, Just Dippin, Bitch Please were all 2001 leftovers

That snds bout right 2 me. I wud say maybe Just Dippin was 1 of the 1st 2001 soundin beats.
I will believe Detox when I hear a single for it and have the album in my hands.
but what if you loose your hands before Detox drops?

lil jay posted a while back saying that the version of ho's a housewife on streetz is a mutha was a kurupton b-side.
and the one on 2001 is switched up slightly.. dre's lyrics are changed which is the obvious difference..

Yeah the "Ho's A Housewife" was a remix off Kuruption, Kurupts verse is the same on it.  It was also the introduction of Hittman wasn't it?  The version on 2001 is the same other than Dre re-doing his vocals and the synth in the hook (plus a few other 'garnishes' on the beat).

"Ask Yourself a Question" was a last minute addition to the album (it's not even on the tracklisting), then "Ho's A Housewife" remix came out a few months after I think.

ok there was hoes a housewife on kuruption which had nothin to do wit dre

then on the streetz is a mutha on the dre phone call, he says he wants to REDO his vocals on the track the beat was slightly different with a whislin in the chorus

then housewife on 2001 was the final product.

i would say ask yourself the question was the first dre 2001 track beat
Hittman is not a real person. He was a computer program generated by Dr. Dre and Mel Man back in the mid 90's. When Dre started treating Mel-Man like shit, Mel infiltrated the computer and put a virus in the hittman program
