I don't think most of you understand what goes on in the studio with Dre. Saying 'co-producer' and he doesn't make the beats, the musicians do, is NOT a valid argument at all. You know I'm a big Brian Wilson fan, Brian Wilson is one of the greatest rock producers of all time. I've listened to hours of his studio tapes producing, because they're available. If Dr. Dre's studio tapes were available (which they never will be, who knows if he even keeps tape rolling, it's all digital), you'd have a much different opinion of him and would probably consider him a genius, not just a good song maker.Dre doesn't come up with every single nuance of every beat... but he DOES O.K. and direct every single nuance of every single beat. He works as a true producer does, just like Brian Wilson did back in the 60's, just like someone like Phil Spector or Quincy Jones might.. he's old school and grew up from when he was a KID spinning records. This guy knows music in and out, he knows how things should sound, he knows what to add to this, what to not use, etc. If you'd ever listened to studio tapes of any famous producer, you'd know that their job is extraordinary. The drummer might play some fills, and Dre will tell him, no, more snare, less cymbal, Dre tells the engineer, move the mic a little closer to the hi-hat and the overhead mike, turn that off. Dre finally gets the drummer playing something that sounds right, and then moves on to something else. His work on a drum track alone might be more involved than anything any other beat-maker in hiphop will do. Dre's drums always sound head and shoulders above others.Any keyboard player can come up with a little riff, something nice sounding... but Dre is the one who says "no, that doesn't fit there, play more of a chord instead of a single melody" or whatever. He does this all the way through the song, with every single instrument. In the 60's, Brian used to jump in and play a drum line if the drummer hadn't showed up yet, or played a piano roll because he had it in his head and it was easier to just play it than explain what it should sound like... or maybe he'd lay down a bass line or play a little guitar part, even though he wasn't formerly trained in any of those instruments. I've heard of Dre doing the same damn thing. This stuff isn't science, some of these big cats like this have something special running through their blood, there's only been a handfull of them and Dre's one of them. It's rare that someone can be THAT type of producer and also be so commercially successful, most of your 'genius' musicians never receive mainstream recognition because their music is so avante guarde... Dre's sold a fortune of records, he'd be even richer if he was a better businessman. Saying he doesn't do much is so fucking rediculous I'm surprised I even ran my mouth this long disputing it. If you knew anything about recording true, created in a room music, you wouldn't ever say something like that about Dre. Guys like Battlecat and Soopafly and Daz aren't even in Dre's area code much less in his league. Even Warren G who I love is so far removed from Dre's talent level that it's mindblowing. It's just not the same thing.BY THE WAY, Quincy Jones like O said released entire albums under his name with his picture on the cover that he didn't play a note, and didn't say a word on.
