Most of ya'll gonna say "Illmatic" yada-yada-yada. Im gonna say(drum roll please) "Lost tapes". It had beats that east and west could get with and he was droppin street knowledge without any esoteric bullshit.

Illmatic - not only Nas' greatest work, but one of the greatest hip hop albums ever made.  Your knock on it is that it's esoteric?   Please explain that logic.

Yeah, I was gonna say, there ain't nothing esoteric about "Illmatic"; it's straightforward East Coast hardcore/gangsta.  It's just that Nas did it better than any other rapper in NYC.

I will say that a strong case can be made to say that "The Lost Tapes" is his 2nd best, but it didn't have that cohesive feel needed to constitute a solid record...it was just a collection of dope songs showcasing Nas at his rawest.  But that alone doesn't make it a great album; great albums are not just dope songs, they're truly the sum of their parts.

I just meant that street cats could probably get with lost tapes. not saying it was ignorant though. he just put things in more basic terms probably with hood dudes in mind. Lost tapes had a "no coast" sound that sounded at home in the west. I think it did have a theme and that was you can still kick knowledge even if you the grimiest brotha out there. Kinda like "criminal minded" by BDP.

Illmatic, Lost Tapes is dope but not on the same level. I'd say his second best was It Was Written
