Daveyd On Warren G

Warren G has been trying to step it up with the release of his album 'Return of the Regulator.' I caught up with this long time vet not long ago to find out how things were moving along. He noted that he had been laying low for a while because he had gone through a lot and was trying to make sure all his legal paper work was in order. He noted that the music business can be treacherous and its important that folks have their business down tight before proceeding. The man who brought us Snoop Dogg, Nate Dogg, Mr. Grim and of course the Chronic sound, said that he got back into the rap game because he felt there was a lot of sub par material being released. He noted that things had progressed to a point where anyone and everyone was putting out a record thinking they can rap. He felt there were a lot of wrong people coming into the game and giving it a bad name.

I spoke with Warren about some of the high points in his new album and he pointed to tracks like Ghetto Village which is supposed to be his next single and uses a sample from Stevie Wonder. Initially I thought he had gotten Stevie to sing the hook. Warren laughed and admitted that most folks think Stevie is singing with him. He did reach out and get Stevie to appear in the video so there's no doubt that even more folks will come to the same conclusions I did.

Warren pointed out another cut called 'Yo Sassy Ways' which is the uniting of his original group 213 that includes Snoop Dogg and Nate Dogg. The track is nice and hopefully will lead to some sort of album. He explained that everyone is ready to roll and make this happen, it's up to Snoop to make some time in his increasingly busy schedule so the trio can head into the studio.

'Young Locs Slow Down' which features WC is another hot track where he sends a heartfelt message to young cats coming up to move away from the fast life. 'Speed Dreamin' which pairs the G-Funk master with the P-Funk master George Clinton gives new meaning to funk. Warren's long time partner Mr. Grimm also appears on the song to add some extra flava. For those who don't know, Mr. Grimm did the classic west coast anthem 'Indo Smoke.' Warren noted that he will soon be turning his attention to Mr. Grimm and working on his LP. He feels Mr. Grimm his one of Hip Hop's best but underrated emcees.

Finally Warren noted that he has assembled a band called the G-Funk Allstars who hopefully will tour with him. Interestingly enough Warren doesn't play too many instruments. He noted that he can do drum programming and play some keys but for the most part he sees himself as an orchestrator with a keen ear. Time will tell how well his new LP does. But one thing is for sure, folks are definitely taking note now that 'The Regulator' is back.

Thanx, tis' coo' to see Daveyd give props to Warren. I'm looking forward to Mr. Grimm's upcoming LP too, I feel Warren when he says about him being a very dope but underrated MC.

I think that if you take one of the 'O's' out of 'Good' it's 'God', if you add a 'D' to 'Evil' it's the 'Devil'. I think some cool motherfucker sat down a long time ago and said 'let's figure out a way to control motherfuckers'.
