An interesting subject: women & hip hop.....
« on: January 26, 2002, 10:46:59 AM »
I had a weird [or maybe not so weird, lol] experience at my work last week....I work at a book/music store [I work in the music section], and I had an interesting experience with a customer that made me think about the state hip hop is in. A lady [in her mid twenties] came in looking for some rap cd's........I asked her what she likes, and she said she was new to hip hop, so she asked what sounded good on the radio. That was immediatly the first sign that she ALREADY had a preference towards commercial rap. I didnt want to lie to here either, so I suggest Outkast, since they are mainstream but are still very creative musically. She said, aight, and she went with Aquemini. But she still wanted to buy another cd or two, so I asked her if she liked some artists. She said she liked Ja Rule, and thats when a "danger" sign started flashing in my head.....I asked her if she liked 2Pac or Bone, and she said NO!!!!! Now, I didnt say anything, but this shit REALLY bugged me. How the fuck can you like Ja Rule, but hate 2Pac, or Bone, both of whom are 100 x better than Ja Rule!?!?!? She ended up buying Aquemini and Pain Is Love........

After she left, I thought to myself......"so this is why hip hop is sooooo fucked up"!!!! Im sorry, but the ladies and hip hop do NOT mix......If you're a lady, and you're reading this, dont get offended, but im speaking as a passionate fan of hip hop, and this shit REALLY bugs me. I hate to see hip hop go in this direction, and its reasons like this experience I had as to why hip hop is going down the shitter. The lady was nice as hell, but damn, her taste in hip hop is WIIIIIIIIZZZZZZZACK!!!!!!!

Anyway, what do yall think of this?? Holla back......

I agree with you up to a point.  Females are important to hip hop sales.  VERY important.  Pac said it himself,

"Dont make music for the niggas.  Make music for the bitch's and the niggas will want what the bitch's want."

I'm just playin devils advocate.  Don't hate the players, hate the GAME!

As much as I hate to say it, I have to...................Agree. And it kills me, cuz im a EXTREMELY passionate fan of hip hop, and the state of hip hop disgusts me right now. Its getting better, seen with releases from Nas, Cormega, the Wu, and such.........but.............aaaaaaarggggghhhhh.

Way to go.

There will always be "Street shit" out there. Just because you have some rappers taking advantage of the radio, you'll always have the grimey street n****z that make shit for the real hiphopheadz. Take Fat Joe's latest for instance: He had 2 radio-joints on there that were mainly on there to sell the album to the mainstream, and then you had the 15-or so other tracks that wouldn't get high rotation on radio. A artist always wanna sell, but with too many "Ja Rule/Will Smith"-tracks on there, you'll lose all cred. in the streets, and many artist's don't wanna do that, and it'll always be like that.

Youre right, but there'll always be street rappers out there, and they're reppin for the hiphop-headz and not the mainstream-heads. And therefore, since hiphopheadz KNOW hiphop, and mainstream-heads know mainstream, the hiphopheadz will always be superior to them when it comes to hiphop. Yaknow? And likewise the mainstream-heads would be superior to hiphopheadz when it comes to pop/rap, pop/rock, pop/techno, pop whatever.. But what hiphophead gives a damn if he dont know who is on top of the "Billboard POP Top 20"?
Ja Rule could be replaced by any dude with a dark voice that could say streetshit and mix it with the "sensible thug & lovaboy". Ja Rule is pop, and not to be compared to 2Pac.

Oh yeah like there's no guys that like Ja rule and not 2pac??? ....a better way to put it would be like MOST females have bad tatse in hip-hop and that's why hip-hop is fucked up..because that's pretty true:most women are bad hip-hop fans but we got ladies like Lee who are exceptions and we got almost as many whack guy rap fans as chicks...women,generally speaking are more profound than men but with music, generally speaking they're looking for a danceable beat and catchy tune...i'll go further if provoked,peace-Tanjint

I think the majority of females who buy hip-hop are most likely to go with the radio/commercial choice, as most have other priorities like make-up & boys (this is also another factor why they choose artists such as Ja Rule) & they don't really care about the history & background of this culture. BUT, I have a female friend who is just as passionate about hip-hop as me, she knows alot & she loves a mix of mainstream (Snoop/Dre/2Pac etc) & Underground. She's not very girly though, she's tomboyish, which might make a difference to how she sees hip-hop. Girls can be fickle creatures  :P

I think that if you take one of the 'O's' out of 'Good' it's 'God', if you add a 'D' to 'Evil' it's the 'Devil'. I think some cool motherfucker sat down a long time ago and said 'let's figure out a way to control motherfuckers'.
