Zidane in running for Golden Ball

Zinedine Zidane is among the nominees for Fifa's prestigious Golden Ball award, given to the most valuable player at the 2006 World Cup.
The France playmaker ends his career in Sunday's World Cup final against Italy.

The 10 nominees include four Italians, Fabio Cannavaro, Andrea Pirlo, Gianluca Zambrotta and Gianluigi Buffon.

Zidane's compatriots Thierry Henry and Patrick Vieira are on the list as are Germany's Michael Ballack and Miroslav Klose and Portugal's Maniche.

Germany goalkeeper Oliver Khan won the award at the 2002 World Cup, while Brazil's Ronaldo was the winner in 1998.

Fifa will announce its final decision on Monday at around 0900 BST.

Full list of nominations:

Fabio Cannavaro (Italy), Maniche (Portugal), Michael Ballack (Germany), Andrea Pirlo (Italy), Gianluca Zambrotta (Italy), Thierry Henry (France), Gianluigi Buffon (Italy), Patrick Vieira (France), Miroslav Klose (Germany), Zinedine Zidane (France).

Retiring after winning the World Cup and the Golden Ball is too rediculous to even put it into a movie, and he could make it. Although, I think it's bullshit to retire when you're this good and just turned 34, I still have my doubts about him fully retiring.

it's Cannavaro for me, .. and that'll only confirm it should he lift the cup.

IMO Cannavaro deserves it more than Zizou. I mean Zidane was incredible vs Brazil, but Cannavaro was been incredible for the whole tornament. I'd give it to Fabio.

P.S. 4 Juventus players nominated.

absolutely, if they only get beaten 1-0 (worse case scenario) i think he should still win it.

i think he will win it as long as zidane doesn't run the show on sunday.

Let's say it's Cannavaro vs Zidane. The two captains of their teams. The one who will get the Cup will win it, imo.

Don't they pick the winner before the Final?

Looks like they will have to wait for this one.
