Ex-Jacket Bosh rises among elite
Team USA aspirant becoming a big star 'real fast'

Las Vegas — The transition from an unexpected NBA talent to a player saddled with great expectations has come so fast to Toronto Raptors All-Star Chris Bosh that for a while it seemed like more than he could take.

"It's been fast, real fast," said Bosh, a former Georgia Tech star who is in Las Vegas with the rest of the chosen few selected to represent Team USA next month in the World Basketball Championships in Japan. "I haven't really been out of high school that long. This is my fourth or fifth year, depending on how you look at it, and it's all been a blur. The success came so fast.

Chris Bosh is showing he can play the inside-out style of a big man suited to international play.

Toronto's Chris Bosh earned his first All-Star appearance last season, averaging 22.5 points and 9.2 rebounds a game.

"I really didn't plan on spending just one year in college, but everything just sort of happened after that. I can't say I didn't want it to happen, but it did catch me off guard a little bit."

It couldn't have turned out better for USA Basketball. Bosh, along with Atlanta native Dwight Howard, is one of the front-runners for a big-man spot on the 12-player roster that will travel to Japan next month.

While he still seems genuinely surprised to be among basketball's elite, he's exactly where many envisioned he would be.

Bosh is the fourth member of the superstar draft class of 2003 — LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony and Dwyane Wade are the others — that was hand-picked for this team. And at 6 feet 10 and a still relatively thin 230 pounds, Bosh has only scratched the surface of what he could become.

"When you look at Chris and a lot of these young guys, it's pretty remarkable how far they've come this fast," Detroit Pistons All-Star guard Chauncey Billups said. "All these guys, man, you sit back and watch them sometimes and realize talent and hard work just can't be denied."

Only 22 years old, Bosh is moving into an undeniably pressure-filled stretch of his still-young career. He recently signed a three-year contract extension, with an option for a fourth, that could pay him up to $63 million.

He's also the player Raptors general manager Bryan Colangelo has rebuilt the team around. If Bosh's third NBA season is any indication, Colangelo had no choice.

Bosh led the Raptors in nearly every category last season, finishing with career-high averages of 22.5 points, 9.2 rebounds and 39.3 minutes before his season ended in late March with a thumb injury.

A first-time All-Star in February, Bosh was the only player in the league to average better than 22 points, shoot better than 50 percent (50.5) from the floor and 80 percent from the free-throw line.

When his contract extension was signed, Colangelo heralded it as a "special day for the future of the franchise."

"It's extra pressure, but I think pressure is good," Bosh said. "Pressure makes me be the best I can be. I can train as hard as I want and still be nervous for what's coming, but I don't let that faze me. I use that nervous energy as fuel to keep me motivated to work hard."

He's taken a similar approach here, with 18 of the league's best players scratching and clawing for one of the 12 coveted spots on the roster.

Bosh has impressed national team coach Mike Krzyzewski with his ability to play inside and out and with his knack for always knowing where to be in an international game, which is drastically different from the NBA.

"Bosh is just all in the passing lanes," Krzyzewski said after Bosh rattled off four quick dunks during a two-minute stretch at the end of Saturday's practice-ending scrimmage. "Both he and Dwight Howard, they're going to get better every day.

"And they can do this [play inside and out], where maybe on their [NBA] teams they aren't necessarily asked to play this way. But they're pretty good out on the floor. They're naturals in terms of their ability to run out on the floor on defense and in their ability to move around with ease on really both ends of the floor."

Still, nothing is guaranteed. Not with Elton Brand and Brad Miller vying for the same spots on this roster. And not with Amare Stoudemire trying to regain his form so he can fight for a spot on the roster of the 2008 Olympic team, which every player here covets.

But Bosh isn't ready to concern himself with the things he can't control. He's got plenty of other things to occupy his time.

"It's funny," he said. "Somebody asked me the other day, 'You're so thin, how do you get the ball down low?' But I just keep playing strong and keep working on my game. It's a constant process for me."

^^LOL. I know. This board's been bullshittin' lately, and it's bullshittin' even harder with no delete button...You know what I just noticed? They replaced the delete button with a remove topic button, which we didn't have before, but is a lot more useless....Anyways, I think Bynum and Bosh are gunna be big rivals in about 5-6 years...PeACe

Howard is my number 1 big for the future... he'll be a monster then, right now Bosh is still better
Cause I don't care where I belong no more
What we share or not I will ignore
And I won't waste my time fitting in
Cause I don't think contrast is a sin
No, it's not a sin
