why i think Knocturnal flopped
« on: July 16, 2006, 06:12:05 AM »
i think it was mainly because of his album getting so heavily bootlegged online..

remember he was quoted as saying he was gonna redo a load of the tracks.. but it seemed to take him about 2 years to do it,

it was right when downloading was at its peak,. everyone was doing it.. and the laws werent in place as much as they are now.

dre, eminem etc.. they are always gonna sell.  But i dont think knocturnal had that big a fanbase already, so sales were going to mean much more to his success than any other established artist.

the tracks that he featured on with dre & the aftermath camp were hot and got major radio play, and with aftermath behind him.. thats the only reason i can think why he never really hit home with his album

if you look at the artists who dre is working with today.. i think you can tell he has learned from past experiences.. by working with artists like bishop lamont etc, they have got that little bit extra . and i think they realise that the way the game is at the minute.. you really got to raise the bar with your artists.

i think knocturnal would have been a major star if he has came out with the same album about 3 years earlier.

i just think its the way the game changed, and how people go about getting their music.

If Knoc had a bit more mainstream appeal, the record company would have decided to blow him up.

Bootleging and a lack of label support were definitely part of the reason, but I think Knoc flopped mostly because he just barely missed the slight West Coast resurrgence that followed "2001" and "Restless" around 2000.  The same thing happened with WC on Def Jam and Mack-10 on Cash Money...if they had been maybe a year or two earlier, they would've been able to capitalize upon the popularity of the C-walk and all that.  But it just didn't happen for any of them.

Still, it's kinda surprising to see someone with Dre's blessing not crossing over.  I think that maybe if they'd put out "Muzik", that song might have helped Knoc get over.

i didnt see knocs appeal at all. he was cool on a few hooks, but other than that, theres no way he could carry an album on his back. who wants to hear a full album of knocturnal. i dont.

Hooks + lots of good producers + Aftermath affiliation usually = commercial success

Not that I disagree with you completely; I'm just surprised the mainstream didn't fall for it.

knoc's style was just annoying. i used to like him, but listening to him now...he's always offbeat, his voice is eww most of the times, and his lyrics all sound the same. but i still think he could put out a good album if he put some real effort into it.

For one that single with Missy Elliot was annoying.  The hook was horrible and the way Missy did the hook was even worse.  LA radio tried to force it down everyones throats.    Why they decided to go with that song after the buzz he got from Super Ugly and 2001, I dunno.

The other part is they tried too hard to make him a mainstream type MC.  Along the lines of a Fabolous of the westcoast.  He doesn't have the charisma or personality to be one of those always in the limelight, mtv, hit record making type person.  Never came off as someone who could do that to me but they seemed to think he could have.  Plus like dood above said, his voice is kind of annoying you have to admit.  Not the kind of voice youd want to hear on the radio every hour.  The voice fit Super Ugly perfectly but other then that......ya, stick to hooks.

Why did he flop? It's not like his career is over! He just has to get another shot.

Knoc flopped cuz he is/was an alcoholic, and did some things to make Dre loose faith in him.

I agree with Baby G on him rapping way off beat at times

rappers going off beat has to be....... THE MOST ANNOYING THING EVER

especially on a tight beat.... anyone ever heard "Cash Sniffin Noses"?

good lord those guys butchered that beat, even Short Dog fucked up

Yep, his own undoing was himself.
