E-40’S ‘HYPHY MOVEMENT’ QUESTIONED!

Two Bay Area hip hop companies say rapper is not part of it; 40 fires back.


Two San Francisco-based hip hop companies are calling out rapper E-40 for falsely claiming the region’s “hyphy movement” on his new Lil Jon-produced album, “My Ghetto Report Card.”

HyphyTV.com and Hyphy Inc. released a joint statement in which they claim E-40 and Lil Jon have “not one Hyphy artist on their roster and tour.” Responding to the claims in an interview with SOHH.com, 40 says: "Ain't nobody ever heard of no Hyphy Inc. ever!”

A spokesperson for the two companies stated: “Lil Jon and E-40 brought some much needed attention showcasing the new and distinctive culture and lifestyle that’s taking place in the Bay Area. But neither artist is in fact a real member of the movement. Since bringing the attention to the movement the pair has been accused of using [it] for their on personal selfish financial gain. E-40, who is not even a Hyphy member, is being accused of using the new found fame and clout to put his family members and label mates in key positions at the expense of Hyphy.”

The statement goes on to note that 40’s relatives – sister Suga T, brother D-Shot and son Droop-E – are all in the process of putting out projects. The companies also single out Lil Jon as “the mastermind behind the plot” to exploit the Hyphy movement.     

“Lil Jon never intends to put a Hyphy artist on; he’s just using the name to keep himself in the spotlight,” the statement read.

After expressing that the companies are virtually unknown throughout the Bay Area, 40 told SOHH:“The hyphy movement started in Oakland for one. So can't nobody from San Francisco be talking about that. I love Frisco, that ain't got nothing to do with the city of Frisco, but I'm not gonna affiliate that with these suckers, whoever these cats is."

In response to the companies’ claims that 40 lacks respect in his hometown, the rapper says: "First of all, my respect in the Bay is to the extreme my dude. If the Bay didn't love me, I wouldn't be at 60,000 units just in the Bay area alone. The love is there. As far as street credibility, I got that. That's a plus. That's straight A's across the board. Don't get it ‘twited’."       

"Overall, the hyphy movement, I helped birth that thang, man,” he continued. “I ain't the one who made it up. All I do is endorse it, smell me? Like I said, I was on the first song 'Hyphy.' I got the utmost respect for Mac Dre, Keak Da Sneak and the Federation and whoever else is about the Hyphy movement, it's all gravy. At the same time, cats like me and [Too] Short all we're doing is trying to represent our soil. What I'm supposed to do, talk like I'm from New York, rap like I'm from New York? If I didn't say nothing about the hyphy. It'll be like 'he done went South. He won't say nothing about the Hyphy.'"       

"What have they done for the movement or whatever else," he added. "That's a hate group if anything. They're probably a rap group trying to get some exposure. Ninety-nine out of 100% gonna love me. There's probably one percent out there that hates me cause they ain't on, bullshi**ing."

The fued between Hyphy Inc and E-40 continues. Here is a statement released by Hyphy Inc:

"HYPHY INC. does not endorse E-40 as the ambassador of the bay. Hyphy Inc. does agree that E-40 makes good music and acknowledges that he is a big factor in bay area music but we still don’t endorse him as the ambassador of the bay. Earl "E-40" Stevens grew up in Vallejo CA, where he later went on to go to Grambling University one of the most prestigious black colleges in the U.S. To go to a college like GRAMBLING UNIVERSITY you either had to have family that had some money to pay or be a real good student. Well which one is it E-40? If your people had money in the hood you're a good kid crying broke and if your people didn't have money you had to be smart to get accepted. So Earl why all the dumb talk when you really have more education then any bay area artist to date? Why are you making people think you're ignorant and can't speak proper English? When growing up proper speaking was all in your house hold?

When did you have time to run these streets that you say you grew up on because according to our records you made it through high school graduated and went to college!! (You smell me?)

E-40 is the square kid that still wants to prove to everyone that he is cool. You know the kid that has to prove to everyone that he is from the hood and that he is down when he really is not. IF YOU LOOK AT THE MANS BEHAVIOR you can see his need to shine complex rearing its ugly head. This is the third time he has showed his self off at the expense and advancement of other artist...

One can say that E-40 doesn't need to hate on other artist but in fact he does. He suppresses them. By suppress I mean he has the connections at radio. When you're in good with the radio station and other artist know that it's easier for them to get play because you have connections people tend to laugh at your stale jokes and really don't tell you how they feel about you because they want to get some airplay which is real hard to get in the bay area. If E-40 wasn't cool with KMEL bay area artist would be talking bad about E-40. People did not start PLAYING E-40 in the bay until Mac Dre PASSED and he appeared on the radio. Take him off the air and see how many people still laugh and joke with him, it would be more like laugh at him. E-40 knows people like his position with the station AND not him as a person because the streets don't know him. We don't see him.

For all this love he says he got for the bay E-40 did not show up at the BAY AREA RAP AWARDS last year. The light was not on him it was on others like KEAK and Mac Dre. E-40 couldn't benefit from it so he didn't show plus no one was bumping him and he was not on the radio AT THE TIME. The Bay got no support from E-40. But now that Dre has passed and he has radio pull GUESS WHO'S BACK!!!

E-40 is not really down with Hyphy like he's not really down with MAC DRE like he hated on the MAC MINISTER and he's now robbing KEAK DA SNEAK.

We all know that MAC DRE was not fond of E-40 and that when the man was alive they may have traded a few verses together for publicity and goodness sake but ANDRE HICKS the late MAC DRE was not fond of E-40. We know that Mac Dre would not support him on a level that he claims.

When the bay area thought THIZZ ENT. was gonna get to shine because MAC DRE was playing on Kmel E-40 showed up to steal the show.

When E-40 released his album Hall of Game back in the 1990's he had a featured bay area artist on his CD by the name of THE MAC MINISTER after letting the MAC MINISTER guess appear on his album the MAC MINISTER had all the hip hop industries top artist contacting E-40 to get in touch with THE MAC MINISTER so they could have him appear on other albums but E-40 was not relaying the information he was hating on THE MAC MINISTER.

Everybody remembers when E-40 got into a brawl at the SOURCE awards. E-40 and his crew of bodyguards jumped THE MAC MINISTER when he confronted E-40 about not giving people his contact information. E-40 got the surface support of many bay area rappers but they all know about E-40's tendencies to hate on other artist who threaten to take his shine.

KEAK DA SNEAK if you go to either one of their Myspace pages you will see that neither one of them has each other on their friends list front page. They both have a total of more then a few hundred thousand friends. Why don't they have each other displayed on each others friends list, when they recently just made bay area history together?

E-40 put KEAK on B.E.T KEAK should be happy to have E-40 on his page why is he not displayed!!! Is Keak not being appreciative? Or is E-40 Hogging the light?

I can not speak on them two in depth but from the outside looking in it is not looking good and people are not stupid the streets know when folks are not cool.

HYPHY INC. likes E-40 as an artist. But the last few times Hyphy inc. has noticed that when its time for E-40 to show some support when it doesn't benefit him, or put the spotlight on another artist, fights tend to brake out arguments erupt and friendships END . Not only do we question E-40 as a person we also stand by our feelings of E-40 and LIL JON exploiting the Hyphy movement. We feel that they are bringing the light to the bay, but the methods and motives of the two are not good. They're bringing the light but they are stealing more shine then they're bringing

To sum up the comments E-40 made in response to ours E-40 is a cool artist but the behavioral practices displayed by him at the expense and legacy of others is in question. Look at E-40's track record and you will see who's the real sucker and hater!!

IN THE 1970'S the show "HAPPY DAYS" was a show about a family doing their thing living their life. They let this guy name FONZY guess appear on an episode, well FONZY came on out shined everyone and stole the show.

That is a bold face lie.  E-40 has a certified platnium plaque and I can tell you when In A Major Way came out it was mainly the bay and westcoast who was purchasing that album.  Mac Dre passed away recently.  In fact when he was still alive I was hearing E-40 on KMEL through a radio stream on the Internet.  Also, anyone who is involved in Bay Area hip hop or follows it closely knows he gets alot of respect and is the ambassador.
