Devean George going to Dallas?
« on: July 25, 2006, 12:10:04 AM »
George on the way: The Mavericks are working on details of a contract that will lock up former Los Angeles Laker Devean George.

The 6-8, free-agent forward was a vital part of the Lakers' championship teams with Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant. That experience is what has the Mavericks excited about the possibility of landing him with a veteran's minimum contract, about $1.2 million, guaranteed.

The Mavericks on Monday finalized the trade that brings backup point guard Anthony Johnson to the team for Darrell Armstrong, Josh Powell and Rawle Marshall. Even if Powell and Marshall are waived by the Pacers, they will not be returning to Dallas, apparently.

The Mavericks, according to Johnson, believe that a veteran with NBA Finals experience will better serve them at this point than young projects. George would fit that billing.

Weird shit, there's gotta be a team which would give him more money

but if it goes through it's great of course
Cause I don't care where I belong no more
What we share or not I will ignore
And I won't waste my time fitting in
Cause I don't think contrast is a sin
No, it's not a sin

WTF? The only reason George was leaving the Lakers was because we didn't wanna sign him for the MLE ($5 million/year), which he was requesting...We picked up Shammond Williams with the vet minimum (1.2 million/year), and let me tell you, I'd rather have given it to George, and I think the Lakers would have given it to him had he not believed his value was higher (which it probably is). Now he's probably just stuck, wishing he had accepted the vet minimum from LA.... He shoulda' learned his lesson from Derek Fisher, who was requesting that Golden State cut him so that he could sign with the Lakers for the vet minimum, after leaving the Lakers in '04 due to the same reason as George...PeACe

Yup...And I KNOW he regrets it, especially now that he has to live in the dreaded Utah.

George Looking At Other Options

The Mavs have offered free-agent small forward Devean George a one-year, $2 million contract, sources said.

However, George's agent, Mark Bartelstein, said he's still exploring other options, including Phoenix, New Jersey and Cleveland. Bartelstein said there's no firm timeline to complete a deal.

George has played all seven of his NBA seasons with the Lakers.

Earlier this summer, the Mavs signed free-agent swingman Greg Buckner to a five-year contract worth -- including incentives -- $19 million. Buckner's first-year salary of $3.2 million covered a huge chunk of the $5.2 million mid-level exception, and the remaining $2 million was offered to George.

Yea, he's definitely looking to get more money...PeACe

To me it's no big deal. He's not what he used to be.

Devean came through in the clutch a lot. I remember when we first drafted him Phil said that he was going to be "the next Kobe Bryant". Sad to see him go, besides Kobe, he was our only championship member left.

LOL...I liked him. He gave consistancy on the defensive end and sometimes caught fire and gave us a bonus on offense...He would get into slumps, but overall, he contributed a good amount for a 23rd pick...Still never lived up to potential though...PeACe
