The Mavericks have agreed to a two-year deal with free-agent forward Devean George, another veteran with championship experience.
Donnie Nelson, the team's president of basketball operations, confirmed the agreement just after noon today.
The deal will pay George about $4.2 million and includes a player option for the second season, according to his agent, Mark Bartelstein.
"It's kind of a low-market deal for Devean," Bartelstein said. "But he's really excited about playing for Avery [Johnson] and he's aware of everything that Mark [Cuban] has done with that franchise. It's a great opportunity for him to come to the Mavericks, win a championship and re-establish himself."
George, who averaged 6.0 points and 3.3 rebounds in seven seasons with the Lakers, gives the Mavericks a solid defensive player to back up Josh Howard at small forward.
Although he's been bothered by injuries the past several seasons, George is now healthy, Bartlestein said.
George (6-8, 235) could also see spot duty at power forward when the Mavericks play tempo-pushing small lineups.
George, 28, was a reserve on Lakers championship teams his first three years in the NBA. He has played in 75 playoff games.
"He made his living as a rebounder and really tough, hard-nosed defender," Bartelstein said.
The Mavericks made acquiring veterans with significant playoff experience a priority after blowing a 2-0 lead over the Heat in the franchise's first Finals appearance.
Point guard Anthony Johnson and power forward Austin Croshere, acquired from Indiana in separate trades, have Finals experience. Swingman Greg Buckner, who signed as a free agent, has played in by far the fewest playoff games (32) of any of the team's off-season additions.
While the Mavericks' bench will feature several new faces, the young core of the team remains intact. The incoming veterans' will be asked to fill complementary roles around power forward Dirk Nowitzki, Howard and guards Jason Terry and Devin Harris.

The Mavericks will probably make only one more off-season addition: a third power forward. They will explore sign-and-trade possibilities for Keith Van Horn that could land another veteran for that role.
Pops Mensah-Bonsu, a 6-9, 240-pound undrafted rookie who played with the Mavericks' summer league team, could be signed if the team opts for a developmental player.

George Saying Goodbye

The Mavericks made Devean George feel wanted, from owner Mark Cuban to Coach Avery Johnson to former coach Don Nelson to the players he talked to, and that made it easy for the Lakers forward to agree to sign with Dallas on Tuesday.

George said he will take a pay cut to join Dallas, which reached the NBA Finals this past season. He agreed to a two-year deal worth $4.2 million, and he holds the option for the second year, meaning George can opt out and re-sign for more money.

"Cuban talked to me and I really was feeling it," George said by phone. "Then Avery talked to me and I was like, 'This is going to be OK with me.' Plus it's room for me to come back next year, and that's a good thing. There was room for growth. It's a good fit, a growing team and they take care of their players."

George played his first seven seasons with the Lakers and was part of three NBA championship teams. He averaged 6.3 points and 3.9 rebounds last season, just above his career averages of 6.0 and 3.3.

He'll play against the Lakers for the first time Dec. 13 at Dallas.

"It's real sad to leave LA," George said. "I have a lot of good memories." George said. "The winning and the locker room with the guys, us joking with each other and laughing." The run of titles from 2000-02, he added, was "gravy on top of the mashed potatoes. But it's time to move on."

see ya DG...he was a nice spark off the bench when healthy and not in a slump which was 9 outta 82 games a year. probably the worst spent MLE in laker history in 02..we coulda had billups

^^Sounds good now, but at that time we had Payton and Fisher playing the point, while Devean George just came off an EXCELLENT Finals performance against the Nets, and people woulda' been mad if we hadn't re-signed George...But yea, now it looks like we overpaid...STILL, the MLE to Aaron McKie and Vlade Divac was A LOT worse...PeACE
