Another group that is hot under the collar is the pioneering group The Crash Crew. This legendary group which came out of Lincoln Projects in Harlem were best known for their innovative, incredible harmonizing routines. There were 5 main emcees Reggie Reg, Lashubee, EK Mike C, G-Man and Barry B-Stro, but the entire Crash Crew consisted of more then 20 people who did everything from providing security, to building sound equipment, to making flyers to establishing Hip Hop's first independent record label [Mike & Dave Records]. This self contained group set a standard for Hip Hop entrepreneurialism and were the precursors to such large self contained crews like the Wu-Tang.
Last week while in New York I ran into some of the group members Yoda, Lashubee, Reggie Reg and Mikey C and they expressed their disappointment with Jay-Z. According to the group Jay-Z uses the hook from a vintage Crash Crew routine in his hit song 'Girls Girls Girls'. For those who don't know, back in '79/80 the Crash Crew released a song called 'Hi Powered Rap'. It was released on Mike and Dave records and features founding member Disco Dave singing the hook 'Girls Girls Girls Girls.. Girls I Do Adore' between the raps of fellow group members. The hook was most pronounced when Disco Dave sings the hook while introducing G-Man who than launches into a harmonizing routine of his own...
'Girls Girls Girls Girls Scream and shout and clap your hands.. the mellow on the mic that I know you'll like is the one they call G-Man'.
This classic song which happens to be one of Hip Hop's first releases was sung over the song 'Get Up Dance' by Freedom. This was same beat used by Grandmaster Flash in their landmark record 'Freedom'
The 'Girls Girls Girls' hook was re-popularized by Jay-Z when he dropped his hit song which features rappers Biz Markie, Q-Tip and Slick Rick singing the hook in the same manner as Disco Dave did 21 years ago. According to the Crash Crew members they were disappointed on several fronts. First, they were not given credit or public acknowledgment. They weren't even mentioned on the album's cover credits. To them it was bit ironic since Jay-Z used to attend some of the old Crash Crew parties. It was also ironic because he went out of his way to lambaste today's artists for not paying tribute to Hip Hop's pioneers. He does this in the song 'Izzo [HOVA]' where he the pioneering group the Cold Crush Brothers. Folks may recall this memorable verse.
"Holla at me... I do this for my culture To let 'em know what a nigga look like, when a nigga in a roaster Show 'em how to move in a room full of vultures Industry shady it need to be taken over Label owners hate me I'm raisin the status quo up I'm overchargin niggaz for what they did to the Cold Crush Pay us like you owe us for all the years that you hoed us We can talk, but money talks so talk mo' bucks"
I called over to Roc-A-Fella records yesterday to find out what the deal was with regard to this. I was told that the Jay-Z had gone through the proper channels and cleared all his samples and interpolation rights. As far as they were concerned, he had properly handled business.
The Crash Crew members insist that no one was ever contacted. They also state that no samples were ever cleared and phone calls and emails to the label's CEO Damon Dash have gone unanswered and unreturned. I got the sense from interviewing the group that it wasn't so much a money thing as it was the fact they simply were never acknowledged for what was clearly a hook and a routine they first brought to light.
