"Next Generation is reporting that E3 as we know it is finished. The games industry has lost its most glamorous show.

"Well placed sources say the news that larger exhibitors were pulling out had prompted urgent meetings among publishing executives. They decided that, without the support of the larger software publishers and hardware manufacturers, there would be no point in continuing. ESA president Doug Lowenstein will likely announce the news some time within the next 48 hours, possibly on Monday. It's possible that the ESA will seek to limit the damage by organizing some form of lesser event in May, but it's clear that the days of an industry event attended by all the major publishers, spending big money, are gone."

Given the importance of this show for the games industry, I'd take this with a grain of salt, but Next Gen isn't generally given to flights of fantasy.

Short news if you don't want to read it: Microsoft, Sony, and EA are behind getting the E3 event downsized to a much smaller show, saying that they don't like spending so much money on booths at the event.

This interestingly is not a view shared by Nintendo, who famously had people on video in a dead sprint past the Sony and Microsoft booths to stand in line for 3 hours at the Nintendo booth and play the Wii.  Basically the first year in a while that industry insiders say Nintendo owned shit at the show, Microsoft and Sony back out.  Pussies. 

In other news, as I mentioned last week, Microsoft's xbox gaming division lost 1.2 billion dollars last year.  Sony lost 225 million dollars last quarter, and Nintendo made 113 million dollars profit last quarter, leaving Nintendo the only people in the industry actually making money off of their gaming systems. 

Rinse; Lather; Repeat.
