the best thing that ever came of me ordering was that one time the person mistakenly sent me the teachers edition of my math book. i didn't notice until one day i wasn't paying attention and the teacher asked me for the answer, when i looked in the book i noticed all the answers were written in pink.  i never took that book with me to class again. i just checked it out of the library as i needed it

buy older editions of books, there really isn't much difference other than things like the beginning summary of each chapter and the reviews and questions at the end.

Think about it, its not like a lot of these subjects get updated or changed each year, the publisher just make new editions because it makes more money.  Unfortunately I didn't realize this until my senior year, I coulda saved a bunch of money.  Also, really think about whether or not you are going to even read the book.  Many classes can be done without reading the book.  I wasted a lot of money on books in college, sometimes I didn't even hardly open the book.

Usually every class has at least one copy of the book at the school library, go there if you need to and read it and make some photocopies of the important stuff.
