Dajuan Wagner, the once-promising point guard whose NBA career was derailed by injuries and a serious illness, signed with the Golden State Warriors on Friday after being out of the league for nearly two years.

Wagner was the sixth pick in the 2002 draft by the Cleveland Cavaliers after just one collegiate season at Memphis, but health problems prevented him from becoming the star most expected.

After averaging 13.4 points in 47 games as a rookie, Wagner's second season in Cleveland was limited to 44 games and limited playing time after arthroscopic surgery on his right knee. He played just 11 games early in the 2004-05 season before his years of stomach pain were diagnosed as colitis, an inflammation of the colon.

Wagner's colon was removed last October, and he lost 30 pounds before returning to workouts this year in hopes of a comeback. Several teams expressed interest in Wagner, who will join a backcourt in Golden State with Baron Davis, Jason Richardson and second-year pro Monta Ellis.

Wagner, the son of former NBA guard Milt Wagner, is the leading scorer in New Jersey high school basketball history, once scoring 100 points in a game.

The Warriors open training camp Oct. 2 in Oakland.

Nets Sign Jay Williams

East Rutherford, NJ (September 28, 2006) - The New Jersey Nets have signed free agent guard Jay Williams, Nets President Rod Thorn announced today. As per club policy, terms of the deal were not released.

Originally drafted with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2002 NBA Draft by the Chicago Bulls, Williams averaged 9.5 points, 4.7 assists, 2.6 rebounds and 1.15 steals in 75 contests during the 2002-03 season. Following his rookie campaign, in which he was named to the NBA’s All-Rookie Second Team, Williams sustained severe leg and hip injuries in a motorcycle accident and has not appeared in an NBA contest since.

The 6-2 Williams spent three seasons at Duke (’00-’02) where he helped lead the Blue Devils to a NCAA men’s basketball championship in 2001 and was named the Wooden award winner in 2002.



Interesting to see how this turns out...Both were high lottery picks who spent their last couple of years re-habbing injuries...Pretty inspirational, hopefully they can still play...

Well, he only played in his rookie season, then got in that tragic motorcycle accident...He's been tryna make a comeback for quite some time. his superstar future has probably been murdered, but I bet he'll still fare well...PeACe

Nets Cut Jay Williams- What's next?

Jay Williams' release by the Nets really wasn't a surprise. New Jersey already had the maximum 15 guaranteed contracts, including rookie Marcus Williams and veteran backup point guard Jeff McInnis. The Nets are trying to work a buyout of McInnis' contract, but even if they do, they really have no need for Williams.

Still, Williams' attempt to come back from that devastating 2003 motorcycle accident impressed his Nets teammates, and they genuinely seemed to enjoy having the New Jersey native around their camp.

I visited the Nets' practice facility last week, and players and team officials there had nothing but good things to say about the former No. 2 overall pick from Duke and how hard he had worked to get back in shape. Nets coach Lawrence Frank even said he was "heartbroken" to have to cut Williams.

I also got a chance to watch Williams (3.8 points in 13.2 minutes over five exhibition games) play against the Sixers the other night. He ran the team capably, but showed little of his pre-wreck explosiveness. He didn't seem to be troubled by the knee, except for perhaps one occasion when he struggled to get around a screen.

Williams' agent, Kevin Bradbury, says there is interest from a handful of NBA teams seeking a third backup point guard. My best guess is that Williams will have to play overseas until he proves he can consistently knock down the outside shot.





Sucks...I thought he might be ready to contribute again...I bet some other team picks him up.

Wagner signs with Polish team

Former Camden High School basketball star Dajuan Wagner, who has battled illness and injury in his NBA career, has signed a one-year deal with a Polish team, Prokom Trefl Sopot, according to eurobasket.com.

The team, which was founded in 1995 and competes in the Euroleague, is based in Sopot, Poland and won the Polish League Championship in 2004 through 2007, and includes former NBA player Travis Best.

Wagner, a former first-round draft pick by the Cleveland Cavaliers, was most recently a member of the Golden State Warriors.

But, the Warriors bought out his contract -- which was a partially guaranteed $1.6 million deal -- last preseason after Wagner wasn't able to keep up with the daily rigors. The 24-year-old Wagner battled severe colitis as well as a knee injury during his time with the Cavs, and finally had his colon removed in October of 2005 at Mt. Sinai Medical Center in New York.

The son of former Camden star and NBA player Milt Wagner hasn't played in an NBA regular season game for two seasons, but has been a superstar in local summer leagues the last two summers.

He played in multiple summer leagues this summer, including in Drexel, Media., Pa., and Voorhees.

While he appeared winded early in a game in July at Drexel, he still managed 31 points and nine assists, making it look easy.

His quickness and athleticism were still very much prevalent, and so was his scoring ability -- he dropped 50 points in a game at Drexel this summer.

"Where I come from, we never quit," the Camden native said in July. "I don't have any quit in me, so I'm just going to keep going."

In July, Wagner was still hopeful of getting back to the NBA, but wasn't closed off to the idea of playing overseas, at least at first.

He confirmed that the Denver Nuggets showed interest in him over the summer and that he'd planned to play on their summer league team before turning an ankle.

If he does well with his new team and shows he's all the way back from his illness and has his stamina back, the NBA is still a possibility, particularly at his age.

The 6-foot-2 guard played three NBA seasons (102 of a possible 246 regular season games) and averaged 9.4 points for the Cavs, who selected him No. 6 overall in the 2002 NBA Draft.

His best season was his first when he averaged 13.4 points and 2.8 assists in 47 games.
