Poem for Tasha

Poem for Natasha

You were a friend in my childhood
In the good times before the bad came
Back then we were like brother and sister
Although we messed around all the same
But we were never boyfriend and girlfriend
We needed no labels to get down
When we started going to seperate highschools
It's like my whole world was changed upside down
I remember my freshman year
I called you and asked you to come to my school dance
I didn't know at the time that it was my last chance
To tell you that you were a true friend
and that things weren't the same without you
But image and repuation were too important to us
and rarely did we ever speak to what was real
That's why when you wrote me that yearbook note
It was the one thing that I could really feel
That was way deep cause I thought you were mad at me
But how interesting is the truth
You didn't find it often in those days
and the year after things only got more confused
But back then you were young and innocent
Even though we thought we were bold and sexually mature
I saw you one last time my junior year
And you were on drugs and I couldn't reach you
Too many layers of image and reputation to tear through
But somewhere behind it all I know you were still my girl
And I wonder if you ever think of me now
Things changed so much, if you saw me you'd be suprised
Maybe we've walked past eachother and didn't even recognize
but back then we really connected, you were my sister and friend
It's funny that people said I was "tryin to be black" just cause I listened to rap
and people said you were "tryin to be white" and you didn't like any rap
But somewhere in between our hearts were connected
If I had one more chance to talk to you again I'd just say thanks for being an eternal friend
It was people like you that made my early teenage years so memorable
the environment was never the same after you changed schools
Lookin back, I want you to know I got your back, and I love you
