Since the decade began....what are some interesting, funny, weird, suspect, ignorant, pointless, irrational, confusing things have you seen happen with West Coast rap? Whatever you list can be described by one of those terms...or it can be 2, 3, or even all of those terms.

Here's a couple that I can drop right now...

-Many people didn't even give 213's album much of a chance because of the fact that Warren didn't produce on it...although the production was as good or even better than every Warren produced album that wasn't his debut, "Regulate: The G-Funk era"

-While we've listed 35-40 different names of west coast rappers who were going to "bring the west back" "put the west back on the map" "get the west some exposure" or "be a factor in the music industry"....we've seen 50-60 unknown rappers from the south, with 30-40 being from Atlanta, to keep coming out nationwide and make major hits.

-From what I have seen and heard, 95% of ALL young upcoming rappers in L.A. have or have had something negative to say about The Game....many say he's an average rapper, and many talk about how he wasn't real in the streets. However, 110% of them would jump on the chance to do a track with him if they had the opportunity.

-2Pac's still released more albums with "new" material since 2000 than most of the upcoming, or once upcoming West Coast rappers have....including our favorites Sly Boogy, Crooked I, Ras Kass, and many others.

-2001 was clearly a high point for the west, and everybody thought we were on our way back after being successful that year. But we ended up fallin off and being even worst than we were in 97 and 98, which were seen as being our "dead years" after running things in 94, 95, and 96.

-Some people say that west coast rap is dead, and that we have to come with a different sound in order to sell to the masses. But everytime a west coast song gets pushed hard, it ends up being a major success...such as "Tell me when to go" "How we do" and "Drop it like it's hot". On the flip side....there have been MANY songs done by other regions that had a strong west coast feel that were successful....such as Lil Jon "Play no games", Jay-Z "Change the game", T.I. "My life", Trillville "Some cut", Akon "Locked up"....which really just shows that it doesn't matter how "west coast" a track sounds, because people end up likin it when it gets heard.

-While we are waiting for "Detox" and similar albums to drop.....we might end up missing out on the next "Chronic" or "Doggystyle".....which basically means that many fans are not willing to give something new a chance because they are only looking to hear from their favorite artists...and although there haven't been any new artists to drop albums at the level of "Chronic" and "Doggystyle"....there might be some artists or camps who could be in the same stage as C.I.A. was in the 80's, meaning they are young enough to end up becoming major factors in the game, and it may just take for them to find their own sound, image, and style....but most of us will end up putting all of these artists into the same "upcoming" "unknown/nobody" category and not even giving them a chance to develop.

True, it was slept on but it is a 213 album it shud hav had Warren producin it!

Yep, it seems like they can just pick sum southern rapper whos half decent, giv him a catchy beat beat and hey presto a top ten hit!

Yeah and its a shame that those artists hav bin workin hard 4 a long time 2 get records out and cant, but Pacs bin dead 4 10 yrs now and hes still gettin regular major label releases.
I will believe Detox when I hear a single for it and have the album in my hands.
but what if you loose your hands before Detox drops?

You are being an ass too right now jumpin on that band waggon "!oooh uh Warren has not made anything similar to his first record meaning he sucks" man get ya rock out cha shoe dude, Warren is better now than ever. In my opinion G Funk Era was a great record, but like Quik Warren got allllot better as a producer.

Keep this thread going people, this could be good.

Something confusing to me is how the hell we fell off again (around 2002). We made a strong comeback around 99. Dre, Cube, Snoop, Xzibit, Kurupt, Warren G, Tha Eastsidaz, etc etc etc were all working together and touring and what not. We started getting more gold and platinum plaques on the West Coast. Then right after the Lakers finished the 3-peat, it's like things went downhill for us again...

I could be wrong, but not a single hip hop album released in 2001 or 2003 from the West Coast had been certified platinum.

-i dont think warren g's production skills are as good anymore.. im sure if it was then his production would of been on it.

-i think the west coast needs a 'new generation' of artists.. feel me on this... the early 90s everyone was looking for dre, snoop and cube.. the late 90s, everyone looking for dre, snoop and cube... the late 2000s, everyone still checking for dre, snoop and cube.. meanwhile, you see the east go thru generations of music (from wu-tang to bad boy, to roc a fella to g-unit), the south went from scarface to ugk to no limit, to all the various atl-texas rappers.. we need new sounding west coast artists.

-west coast doesnt have a powerhouse music label to push their artists.. like it or not, jerry heller and suge knight did their thing. they made sure we heard the music they wanted us to buy over and over.. there is no music exec willing to spend lots of time and money in the background of the business to push the music.. i wish someone like damon dash would move to the west, sign a bunch of artists and just go to work on them..

I think a lot of these older dudes need to focus more on building record labels and producing then dropping albums/mixtapes that aren't nearly on par as there earlier works. A side from Dre who is pushing their labels? Snoop is doing a little, but hasn't released anyone other then compliation albums in recent years. Death Row was the West's power house and when it fell so did the West. No one oustide is going to offer the deals, so the West has to make there own.

I definitely wasn't tryin to jump onto that bandwagon at all....I liked his last few albums, and played them all. But after listenin to 213's album and listenin to his, his albums definitely weren't better as far as production goes. The "Groupie Love" remix was definitely better than 95% of the beats he'd done on his albums since Regulate...but I don't think there were too many tracks on his last album that could really step to "Run up on us" "Lovely girl" "Joysticc" "Appreciation" and the rest of that album. Yeah, Midnight hour definitely had some comparable beats with "PYT" "I need a light" "Walk these streets", and I do think it would have been dope if Warren had been able to produce 5-8 songs on the 213 album....but as it is, the album was still a dope album that I still play more than most of the west coast releases I've heard in the last few years.

And personally, I don't really think Warren has gotten better as a producer....most of my favorite tracks from him all came from 93-96....."Ain't no fun" (if you wanna say he did it), Indo Smoke, Regulate, Eastside LB, Round and Round, Regulate, This DJ, Do you see, We want ya hands up (from Nutty Professor), So many ways.....those are all my favorite beats from him, and he hasn't topped any of those since then.
