When is it too late...
« on: October 26, 2006, 11:03:51 AM »
For a new artist to blow? Especially somebody like Crooked I who has had buzz for damn near 6-7 years now. I think a lot of us were impressed by his lyricism and flow when he first came onto the scene, but after all these years can he still blow up? To a lesser extent, the same goes for guys like G. Malone, Saigon, and other new artists who've built up some buzz but still haven't dropped an official album yet.

Game is an artist who was on the shelf the longest in recent memory. I remember hearing him for the first time on that JT presents Nas and the Game QB 2 Compton back in 2002 and the Documentary didn't drop until early 2005.

Another interesting question is can someone who had some shine but then dropped off ever come back, like Hittman?

Its all about appealing to the non hip hop fan, if an artist can get there attention it dont matter whether he is new or old.

Crooked I's time is up. He will eventually drop his album and it will most likely be hot, but he won't blow up. As for Glasses Malone, he's releasing his album in Feburary so it remains to be seen.

It is nearly impossible.

I wonder if there'll ever be a George Foreman of rap - someone who was big back in the day and then came back years later. Wouldn't mind seeing like MC Ren, Public Enemy, or even Dresta and BG Knocc Out come back and make it big.

Yeah artists like Glasses and Bishop really do not count to me. They are still creating a fan base. Crooked I on the other hand, must think Suge is going to still make money off his albums or something. I don't understand even after he left DR and is not legally binding to them why he just did not drop a street album or something. The mixtape is fire don't get me wrong, but he had a bonafided hit with Boom Boom Clap and nothing came out of it.

It's really hard to recreate a buzz behind you. Espically in hip-hop these days were buzz is all that counts. Plus hip-hop is continously be marketed towards a younger audience. Ask most rap fans who Dresta, BG, or even MC Ren is and these idiots couldn't give you an answer.

But E-40 never really fell off. Breakin News, Grit & Grind, & Loyalty and Betrayal while not succesful albums, did manage to sell okay numbers (I'm pretty sure they all sold over 200K). With all the buzz around his last album (working with Lil Jon, hit single, bring hyphy to the mainstream) only selling 475K is a little disapointing when comparing it to the sales of the 3 albums I mentioned.

Think about Twista.  Anything is possible.  This guy was the last guy I ever saw blowing up to the mainstream but he did it.  I meen yeah he raps real fast so that has alot of mainstream appeal to him right there, but listen to his albums like "Adrenaline Rush" or "Twista and The Speednot Mobstaz"  he was a fuckin amazing underground rapper who didnt sound like he would over "blow up" to the mainstream but he did, anything can happen.

Yeah, but it served it's purpose, putting the Bay back in the mainstream. I am sure 40 is cool with that at the end of the day. And gold for today's standards is not bad at all.

Yeah, that's true and Kanye had alot to do with that also. It is almost better to come back into it like Twista did. Kanye is the "it" producer/rapper at the moment, so having a lead single with him and Jamie Foxx can't hurt. With both being from Chicago it only made sense. His next album after that did go gold, but something was missing from that. Kanye did the same with Common.

No doubt, I'm just saying he never fell off.

Game put out his first project in 2002 or 2001 and in early 2005 he blew up. For an artists on the West Coast (where deals aren't exactly given away) and for an artist on Aftermath (who shelves there artists for 3 years), that is a split second. 3 years is nothing.
