School buses vandalized in Waterbury, classes canceled



(Waterbury-WTNH/AP, Oct. 30, 2006 Updated 6:05 AM) _ Classes were canceled in Waterbury Monday after someone vandalized 40 percent of the school bus fleet.

The vandalism happened over the weekend. Buses were broken into and fire extinguishers were sprayed inside. Also, graffiti was scribbled inside and out and other damage was done.

Police and forensics experts we at the bus yard Sunday and were expected back today to look for clues to find the vandals.

Bus drivers showing up for work said they were not notified of the vandalism, though teachers had already been informed that classes were canceled.

School Superintendent Snead tells News Channel 8 he had to cancel classes because they do not have the buses to accommodate all of the students. The buses serve public schools, parochial schools and Kaynor Tech school.

Drivers said the district just bought 125 new buses, and they have less than 2,000 miles on them.

Many drivers say they spend more time in their buses than they do in their personal cars.
