This album definitely surprised me, a lot. I was thinking it would be a very mediocre album, and that it would be seen by most as a flop. However, I realized that he has had MAJOR buzz, and I was like damn, if this album is at least decent, it should sell a lot...but this album is fire.I'd give The Doc a 9.2, and after 2-3 listens, I'd give this a 8.4. Positives: Production is on point on almost every beat. Game's voice and presence is remarkable, even though he does sound just like Dre on many tracks. Has a decent range of topics, and doesn't sound boring on anything. Album has a consistent sound overall, and sounds much more West Coast than The Doc...but doesn't sound outdated or played out at all, as many West Coast albums do nowadays. Although there may be 1-2 songs that are considered to be weak, they don't take away from the album, and are still listenable. Doesn't have a grip of guest appearances, and holds the album on his own. Album has MANY songs that just sound complete as being songs, and sound as if he really sat down with the producer and discussed the direction of the song and the beat. Uses MANY concepts and elements that haven't been heard in a while, such as the movie clips, Mac Minister talking on the track in true DPG form, the female singin on the track in true DPG form, the scratchin of the hooks, the breakdowns in "Compton" that sound VERY early 90's NWA style. Guests hold their own on every track, and it doesn't sound like he just threw anybody on any song. Sounds as if he really spent time on the whole thing, and didn't just rush it and throw it together. Definitely doesn't sound as if he was trying to make a watered down, commercially appealing album....but succeeded in making an album that will appeal to most rap fans while maintaining a very street, gritty feel on most tracks. And overall.....proves that he does not need Dre or 50 to make a good album, which will shock most people. Most people who don't know Dre isn't producing on it will not even care after hearing it.Negatives: No strong, standout, potentially classic radio/commercial type of songs, such as "Dre day" "Nothin but a G Thang" "Gin and juice" "California love" "How we do" "Hate it or love it" "Drop it like it's hot" "Still D.R.E." "G'd Up". He has some standout tracks, but they are standouts for album cuts, and nothing that will be on top 25 countdowns five and ten years from now. He does namedrop TOOOOOO much, and he mentions Dre's name way too much on many tracks. It is cool to an extent, but sometimes it's just like damn. He uses the same references as he's used on the first album and all of the mixtapes. This won't impress those who are harsh critics of "lyricism" or those who are heavy on hearing punchlines. Doesn't even have a strong club hit, which many mediocre and even garbage albums seem to have. Overall: One of the best West Coast albums of the year, and possibly for the decade. Definitely holds his own, on his own.
anyone feelin' that track with nate?
There's a few good tracks on here, but as a whole, the album is wack, no homo.. Dude's mixtapes are better than this shit imho.. I give it a 3/5..
