Wasted article I wrote for Incognito's new website
« on: December 02, 2001, 01:24:34 AM »
Yo, this was going to be my first article for Incognito's website:: -- ¦¦ hip hop reviewed ¦¦ -- :: ....... But I ended up rewriting it in a different way, so I could tell the inside story behind the way they've historically mishandled West Coast artists.... Dove Shack, Twinz, G Funk Records, Jayo Felony, I'm not going to use any of this, but so I don't feel like I wasted my time, here it is for ya'll.

********************************************

The Real Story Behind Def Jam's 20 Year Dominance of the Rap Game..... From A West Coast Perspective

"If It wasn't for the West/ These rap niggaz wouldn't need a vest around the chest"....

Words such as Xzibit's chorus on Kurupt's track, "Callin Out Names" (sampled from 3 Card Molly) express an aversion that lies deep in the hearts of of many Left Coast artists.  Rass Kass questions the East Coast dominance on the track Sonset "So why these niggas actin' like/ Since they live in the state/ That rap originates/ They automatically, all time greats?"
Although Rass's diss was more a rhetorical statement, than a question, allow me to offer an answer to those perplexed by the East Coasts 20 year dominance in hip-hop.
To firmly grasp the root of the East Coast dominance we must first take a thorough look into Def Jam's 20 year dominance.  Because it is Def Jam, that has been dominating hip-hop, for as long as the East Coast has been dominating hip-hop.  Do not however automatically assume that Def Jam is an East Coast rap label.  On the contrary, they have released albums from both the East and West, and seen recent success in the South with Ludicrous.
Def Jam was a label that was started by Rick Rubin.  Rick Rubin has seen success in both Rock and Rap music.  And it is no suprise that he was the genius behind Aerosmith and RunDMC's hit "Walk this Way" a track that resurected Aerosmiths carear, and marked the begginings of the rock/rap hybrid that is now arguably the most commercially viable category of music today.
Russel Simmons was managing artists and promoting shows around the time Rick's label was formed.  Rick and Russell soon became business partners, and had many succesful years together in the late 80's.  (years later Rick would leave the label and be replaced by Lyor Cohen)
Russel Simmons, is responsible for launching the carears of a number of the games most prominent rappers.   Kurtis Blow, Beastie Boys, RunDMC, LL Cool J, Slick Rick, Public Enemy, Fresh Prince, DMX, Jay-Z, Ja Rule, and many more.

I stopped there and scrapped what I had started writing. I rewrote the article entirely.  I went ahead and left the deleted part here so I didn't feel like I completely wasted my time.  The new one is all about the inside story of Def Jam's relationship with Warren G's "G Funk Records" through 94-97.   I'm a staff member at Incognito's new website, it should be up soon, I'll shoot ya'll a link, the article will be there as soon as the site is officially opened, in a matter of days, peace.

>:(

Def Jam has fucked over many WS artist such as Richie Rich,Jayo Felony etc.....  Not enough promotion and they won't even release their albums. DMX,Ja RUle,Jay Z get an album per year but Richie Rich and Jayo Felony have their albums delayed forever >:( >:(

I think WC is signed to Def Jam and I am really afraid we might never get an album from him, could some1 confirm this??? Anyway, Def Jam should start Def Jam West and have somebody in charge of it, much like Scarface recruits for Def Jam South,.  If they do that and release albums then they will have shit on lock.
