"The Doctor's Advocate" album reviews
« on: November 13, 2006, 03:26:54 PM »
I've seen three different reviews for the album by critics (not including the NY Times one), and this album is getting nothing but props from everyone.  Everyone's recognizing it's a hot album and I wouldn't be shocking anyone if this album could get nominated for some awards.  Let's see if TBCT gets these kinds of reviews praising the album.  But here are three links to some credible reviews of the album, they are usually onpoint with their reviews:

Doctors Advocate review by moogs

****

When doc says its a rep its a rep even Jayceon Taylor, son of Dres longtime friend and former bodyguard, has to obey. The kid with the big talent is only rappin for a few years but has allready been able to copy and sometimes even perfect rapstyles from todays toprhymers. Eminem, Nas, Dre they all have seen or will see their styles bein copied with scary preciscion. But talent nowadays isn't enough to appeal to Dre. You have to be humble, cause godfather is in his fourties and doesn't want that beefshit anymore, definitly not in his own Aftermath house. So 50 cent seemed to be the winner of the incamp beef after Game got dropped from the label and the two new singles couldnt match their predessors sales and qualitywise. It started to look like there was a one way ticket to the hiphop graveyard being reserved for Game. But were we all wrong. All of a sudden Game has seem to made a sophomore album that almost no other rapper could compete with because it might be even hotter than its arguably classic predessor. And although it doesnt really contain hitsingles, it does contain bangers and a fresh bulk of g funk. Something pop and hiphop music have been missing for a while.

Game has chosen to take the open, honest and more personal route on this album. He tells about his trials and tribulations in hiphopwonderland. It's like a reallife soap. From fuckin bootylicious Vida Guerra to visiting awardshows with his neighbourhood friends and later on gettin betrayed by them aswell as the public beef he underwent with his brother. Also the rapper is finally clear about his acted blood and gangster image. His family has blood ties but Jayceon never really officially was a gangmember he was just bangin gin and juice. Still he is not ashamed and remains wearin red. He is just what he is, a wannabe gangster like 99 percent of the major label rappers. Interesting, because this had not been done before by another rapper. But it also leaves the listener with questions about the position of issues like honor and selfrespect in todays youth.

Except from a few lesser interesting tracks the majority of the album is aswell lyrically as musically sharp and heading in a fresh new direction. Game knows it and bravely calls it the blueprint for Detox. It contains a new westcoast hiphop mixed with eighties elektro pop sound. Producers like JR, Scott storch, Notz and Ep pope have developped (probably under Dre's supervision since Aftermath trademark artists Chauncy and Marsha both appear) a sound that will lead the direction for westcoast rapmusic specifically and probaply popmusic in general for the next couple of years. Games flow and voice is strong, never misses a beat. Most of the time he is rappin like Dre, the person who also functions as the main theme of the lp when you view it from a literal point of view, and with great succes; the great doctor must be hell of jealous cause he'll never match games easyness of dre type of beatbraggadocio. Never heard a rapper bit and improve another rappers rhymestyle so openly, nonchalantly and shamelously as Game did Dre's.

On the will.i.am produced Compton Game spits ferocious like Nas in his Illmatic haydays. On the title track, he raps like Joe Beast (old aftermath employee) again, his so called drunk flow creates the same kind of empathy as for the fan in Eminem's Stan. Like earlier mentioned Dr. Taylor admits he is more a gangsterrapfan than a real gangster. And finally confrontin Dre with his own same fake attitude or else double moral standard while also givin a subliminal to 50 cent by statin': who told me it was ok to say fuck the police. Pure greatness.

The album is filled with dejavus to the goldenera of gangsterrap. The All about you Snoop closening on Tupacs All eyez on me got persiflated well, the Funky worm from Ghetto bird has returned on the westcoast anthem California vacation with succes and even the album opener which clearly bites Dre's chin check beat works in the artists advance. The Ep pope produced track happens to be the best track on the album. The combo of extremely fresh synth sounds, the banging drums, catchy chorus, along with games retorical skills and the marvellous mac minister interpolation make this to be the best gangsterrapsong and albumstarter in years.

Tracks like the potential hitrecord Too much and the both cinematic One night and Old english prove the growth of games songwriting capabilities. Even the lesser efforts all contain the albums bounce and overall sound which makes this album randomly rotationable. Haven't had this luxury since.., well since the Documentary.

So is this album better than the Documentary? Its hard to say because its so different. The Documentary was flawless except for Games contribution which was boring at times. Name dropping all over the place, without there being a real direction nor portray of vision. The new record is far from perfect, but its less static also. Game has a direction. He chose to portray himself as a wannabe Dre in which most listeners ironically will recognize themselves. It's definitly a milestone because hiphop has reached the point where the fan has managed to make an album that the fans will love about being a fan. Genius somehow in someway.
