its not as much as it sounds.  B/c you gotta realize now all the expensives a big record label might cover you gotta take out of your pocket now.  Plus it's a lot more work now b/c your in charge of your promotion and all that other shit.  Plus without the big record label promotion behind you're going lose some in sales.  At the end of the day you will make a few more bucks and have artistic freedom but its not like every indie artist is caking.  B/c if that was the case why would anyone stay on a major.

When you're on a major the money you make off records is only the fundamental income... you get so much more exposure on a major, which can ultimately pave the way for you to sellout big concerts, star in movies, bring out clothing lines, etc - and no, Im sure you dont make 7 bucks off a sold record on Koch.

And I won't waste my time fitting in
Cause I don't think contrast is a sin
No, it's not a sin

but you gotta remember out of that 2 plus million he made off of that he also has all the other expensives a major label would usually cover to promote the album.  But regardless hes still brings home a nice chunk of change.

But you gotta remember the money spent by the label for promotions is payed back by the artist.

Yeah, I agree.  Look @ Snoop Doggy Dogg.  Perfect example.  It's common knowledge he's been locked down in contracts for years (although I guess he's finally out of them now).  Suge Knight even sold his ass like a slave to No Limit records.  I mean he had no choice, either do it or get sued into oblivion and nobody he knows eats for the next 30 years.  Basically slavery.  Look @ what Snoop (smart motherfucker) did, though. Around the time he goes to No Limit, you start hearing about all these fuckin' concerts he's doing.  Why? Because Death Row isn't getting a piece of the concerts, Snoop is.  Then he releases movies, starts producing other artists, starts releasing a clothing line, his own Cadillac, his own type of blunt papers, I mean he's got his name on hundreds of products and he's making money off of every fucking one of them and not paying the people he's contractually locked into slavery with a fucking penny of it.  So not only did he use a major label to get the exposure to be able to do that, he basically overcame a 7 or 8 album slave contract and became a multi-multi-millionaire on the SIDE.  NEVER would have got that exposure on a small label.

Yup, that's true, too.  On a major or a minor, you're still gonna pay back all the promo and even the studio time and everything.  A major though can get you a lot more accomplished, better distribution ,videos on mtv, bet, major tours, get your shit played on clearchannel, etc.  A minor limits all that, so you're always gonna sell 4 or 5 times more on a major... so unless you're getting paid 4 or 5 times more on a small label, it's not worth it because you dont' get the added exposure benefits like I was talking about with Snoop above.  IMHO if you're hot you'll do well on a major anyways, it's possible if you're on a small label to be hot and not sell for whatever reason and never make it.  Major label is always a better shot (at least for somebody unknown)

I Highly Doubt it, unless the artists are doing their own marketing and promotion and they get no advance. No way would any label in their right mind give $7 an album away to an artist. they would be making less than the artist, i think its all a joke and just a face they put on when they are on koch, trying to up themselves.

50 made a good point the other day.  If Koch artists really did get 7 per unit don't you think more people would be jumping on Koch?

Doesn't Koch only do distribution and leave the artist to do everything else?  I'm lovin Koch - artists undoubtedly make more $ / album than on a major (at least 95% of the time) and they let the artist do whatever they want.  If Jimmy does 300k on Koch vs. Interscope, it means a fucking world of difference.  Plus look at "We Fly High" - easily Jimmy's biggest hit to date.  That was a smash fucking record.  You guys think that blew up because tons of promotion from a label?  No, it was a dope beat, catchy hook, not to mention a little dance along with it.

Just watch - lots of artists are gonna start pushing decent numbers on Koch because they're doing what they want rather than what some cocksucker in a 3 piece suit is telling them.  Hell look at Prodigy - The 2 joints I've heard from his latest shit completely shit on anything he's ever done on Interscope.  Its cuz he's doing what he wants and you can tell.  Koch is in a really interesting position in the industry.  I hope they continue to get successful acts.

artists on Koch also have more artistic freedom since they are paying for their own promotion they can do the music they want and put it out, rather than have an exec tell them to make a pop record, I still don't think its $7 a record but its definitely a good amount

get yourself a P&D with a major and you can make 7$ a pop. how y´all think Master P made all of his money? he sold millions of records indie then he negotiated his deal with Priority and came out with the biggest deal in rap history. he did everything in-house(the artwork, production, promotion+fucking his artists outta their money lol) and he made over 70% of the 10$ that a label gets back from every unit. and add that up with the 70+million albums No Limit sold. James Prince got a straight up P&D with Asylum aswell that´s why Rap-A-Lot doesn´t spend any money on promotion and videos coz they don´t mind selling 100-300k coz their gettin paid anyway. these NY "moguls" need to take note from how these southern hustlers been pimping the industry for the last 15 years.
