get yourself a P&D with a major and you can make 7$ a pop. how y´all think Master P made all of his money? he sold millions of records indie then he negotiated his deal with Priority and came out with the biggest deal in rap history. he did everything in-house(the artwork, production, promotion+fucking his artists outta their money lol) and he made over 70% of the 10$ that a label gets back from every unit. and add that up with the 70+million albums No Limit sold. James Prince got a straight up P&D with Asylum aswell that´s why Rap-A-Lot doesn´t spend any money on promotion and videos coz they don´t mind selling 100-300k coz their gettin paid anyway. these NY "moguls" need to take note from how these southern hustlers been pimping the industry for the last 15 years.

And I believe Cash Money did a similar thing with Universal back in the day.  They push major units on their own locally and have HUGE bargaining power with the majors.

Artists probably do make $7 dollars a unit on Koch. Koch doesn’t just do straight distribution anymore, now they’re like a mini label… or rather a minimalist label. An artist who has a straight distribution deal probably makes closer to $9 a unit and larger more established indi labels could get even more. Koch does promote their artists through the small channels they have and they definitely have some ability to get records played. I’m sure you can work with them and raise your level of promotion in return for less per unit.

Let's not forget that majors offer bigger singing bonuses. On top of that they can also offer addtional bonuses for every nth album you sell (if you negotiate a good contract).

yea, but Cash Money "only" gets about 4.50$ for every unit sold but they also recieved the 2 biggest sign on "bonuses" or whatever in music history. their first one was for 30 million in 98 and they got anoher 80 million(and that´s non recoupable money)when they negotiated their latest deal with Universal.

it´s pretty much impossible to get signing bonuses if you haven´t sold atleast 1 million records indie. what majors give you is advances which is money outta your own pocket anyway. but you don´t get advances on an indie company so it can definently be hard for new artists to take care of their families waiting for their album to come out.

But you gotta remember the money spent by the label for promotions is payed back by the artist.
No it isn't. Why do you think an artist only makes >$2 per record? The rest of the money is going to the label, which in turn promotes your album. The only thing you're paying back is an advance/budget the label gives you.

naw, you´re paying for pretty much everything. and you know that the budget is huge for albums coz the budget includes promotion and whatnot so as an artist you are paying for everything.

How is that possible? If you sell a million records, your making less then $2 million dollars. If your making less then $2 a record there is no way in hell you can pay back the millions of dollars in promotion it takes to release an album.

why you think artists are making less then 2$ of every unit they move? they only get such a small cut coz they´ve paid for everything. and that´s the reason you make so much more on indie coz an idependent label don´t sepnd no money on your shit. the general artist out there barely makes a dollar for every record they sell just coz they have to recoupe everything the label have spent before they see any money at all and if you don´t recoupe you´re only gonna make money from publishing.
