Greatest Rapper vs Greatest MC. Differences???
« on: October 15, 2001, 03:53:13 PM »
Who's the true G.O.A.T. (as one of the homie asked on another thread)? What's the difference between rapper and MC??? Even though both are obviously related and inclusive to some extent, basically, to be classified among great RAPPERS, you gotta have some street credibility and props, lyrical ability, overall success (meaning platinum sales plus radio, MTV and BET appeal), cultural influences (among Blacks, Whites and everything in between), longevity, creativity and a positive legacy. Now, a great MC also has street and undeground credibility, creativity and respect among his peers but more than ANYTHING, he MUST have treacherous lyrical ability (mainly when it comes to wordplay, flow, delivery, rhymes, content and substance). Fuck MTV. A great MC does NOT NECESSARILY needs to have mainstream success (KRS) and/or longevity (Biggie only lasted 2 years and a half). Therefore, GREAT RAPPERS include Nas, Ice Cube, Scarface, LL, Jigga, Biggie, Snoop, Big Pun, Eminem, Xzibit, Redman, Method Man, DMX and others. But 2PAC fits in those categories more than ANYONE in Hip Hop and as far as I'm concerned he's the Rappers G.O.A.T. Then again, GREAT MCs ALSO include Pac, Nas, LL, Scarface, Redman, Cube, Jigga, Biggie, Em, Pun among others (no question about it) but first and foremost they include KRS One, Kool G Rap, Slick Rick, Big Daddy Kane, The Lady Of Rage, Guru, Common, Ras Kass, Black Thought, Talib Kweli, Freddie Foxxx, Mos Def, Jeru Tha Damaja, Inspektah Deck and others. But RAKIM is the MCs G.O.A.T., simple as that. So, here's the topic: greatest rapper, greatest MC. What y'all think???? Holla back, that's an interesting topic (for a change)... and pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease, keep it STRICTLY HIP HOP, none of that beef and shit coz I ain't dissin'/forgettin' NOBODY. I just can't name all the cats I feel...

a great MC is someone who excells in lyrics (rhyming not substance {usually}) and freestyles, liked more for the way his words are rhymed rather

examples:
Rakim
Kool G Rap

a great rapper is someone who excells in flow, pretty good lyrical capabilities, liked more for what he has to say more than the way his rhymes are worded

examples:
2pac
Ice Cube

the best rappers of all time are:

1. 2pac
2. Rakim
3. Ice Cube
4. Chuck D.
5. KRS one

the best MC's are kinda hard to pinpoint though, but Rakim probably tops that list, even though i don't think i've heard him freestyle

Dog, that was not the point behind my thread. I'm tired of those "3, 5 or 10 favorites rappers" thread. I want cats to understand the difference between Rapper and MC, if possible. So please, hit me with your favorite rapper AND your favorite MC. It can be the same artist, it's all good. But 1 (ONE) NAME ONLY. I wanna see if cats actually differentiate between rapper and MC... aaiight, son?

Man, Chef_Raekwon, that was a weird-ass post. Rage is one of my favorite MCs/rappers, even if she is a "bitch". Oh well...*just plain ole stares at Chef_Raekwon, muttering "dayum, ain't allowed opinions"*

My favorite MC, as in at freestyling and shit, is either Rakim, Canibus or Eminem.

My favorite rappers, in general, is either Cube, Pac, Fredro Starr or Common.

I'm say:

MC:Canibus

Rapper:Fredro Starr

Chef_Raekwon, Rage is one of my favorite MCs ever... I can tell, u never sat down to really listen to RAGE spit, let's say, on her own solo album. Fuck sales, the underground (I'm talkin about DOGS, not even chicks) praises her. U need to check her out but even if u don't, it's still my opinion. She's DEFINITELY one of my favorite MCs of all time and the ILLEST female MC ever; EVER (I said MC, not rapper)!! Lyrically, she fucks a whole lot of rappers out, male, female, faggots, whateva... None of those cats selling records today can fuck with Rage on the mic. She murders shit... which was my definition of a true MC by the way. Son, U really need to listen to joints like "Some Shit", "Super Supreme", "Microphone Pon Cok", "Sho Shot", "Breakdown"... to understand her lyrical prowess. RAGE IS THE SHIT. Period...
