funny, i was going to post something similar.

I put 2001 on for the first time in a while yesterday. banged it straight through and damn... this shit still hits like the day i got it. Even the radio singles that got soooo played out are still dope. Actually Ive never once got tired of Still DRE.

im never quick to call albums classic, but after 2 years i think i can safely call 2001 a classic album. Superior production, top notch raps (I appreciate Hittman more after every listen), and well, just a bomb album. except for the skits.

However its still not on The Chronic's level imo, purely for that album sheer originality and historical/musical significance.

2001 pretty much classic to me.. always a tight album to isten to.. but as for tha chronic.. 2001 isnt as good.. chronic is just CLASSIC.. 2001 4 sure isnt better than chronic IMO.. just listen to those classic gangsta funky beats

I been reading all this shit and I agree with a lot of what y'all are saying.  Especially Lil' Jay, K-Dogg and Overseer.  Ever since I got 2001 it has been slowly inching closer and closer to the original Chronic with each listen.  Granted, it will never have the importance or influence that the first one had, but in purely musical terms, it is damn close.

There is a huge difference, though.  The Chronic was an album that I loved from day one, it had the type of songs that you just felt as soon as you heard them.  It doesn't take a lot of work to like The Chronic, it's a very accessible record.  In that respect, I actually think Doggystyle is the better album.  But with 2001, the beats in general are much more complex, and the rhymes are more advanced (due mainly to Hittman's writing), making it harder to get into.  But like Cube said, once it gets you, you can't get enough of it.  And the fact that it's so complex makes it's replay value much higher than the original Chronic because you hear things you never noticed before almost every time you play it, and you don't know what's around every turn before you get there.

The sad fact is that most people don't want music that doesn't grab them from the first time they hear it.  It takes a long time for a record like 2001 to get the universal respect it deserves (i.e. Paul's Boutique), but I think eventually this album will go down as a true classic, equally as good it's predecessor.

5 years from now, i dont think people will give Chronic 2001 .... therefore, i cant place it as a classic album. Doggystyle is still rememberd by everybody, the OG Chronic to .....
