One goal left for the Legend
Romário may reach the 1,000 goal mark next Sunday
27 maart 2007 16:30
Romário de Souza Faria will be rested tomorrow, but Sunday will be the day, when the former PSV striker, who needs only one more goal to reach the 1,000 goal mark in his professional career, could reach the historic milestone, obviously at the Maracanã Stadium, the place where he feels most at home.
The first PSV shirt for the 2006-2007 season was handed to Romário.
Vasco President Eurico Miranda is adamant Romario will score his career 1,000th goal in a game that will draw more media attention than tomorrow’s state championship game at São Januario, which cannot bear a comparison with Maracanã, Brazil’s holy football ground. Romario himself has pointed out before that he is not particularly concerned about where he will score his 1,000th goal, but appreciated his President’s advice not to play tomorrow. “An event like this can only take place at Maracanã.” Next Sunday Vasco will meet Botafogo, the only club in Rio for whom Romário has never played, at Maracanã. Romario has scored 30 goals in his last 38 games, including a hat trick that he netted in his previous game.
Romário would love to score his 1,000th goal from the penalty spot. “I would be a dream come true to convert from the spot, as everybody will pay even more attention. I will be more nervous that I was at the World Cup 1994 final. I hope our opponent’s goalkeeper will understand my emotions.”

Romário still stuck on 999 goals
05 april 2007 13:00
A large crowd had turned up at the famous Maracana Stadium in Rio on Wednesday night, hoping to celebrate Romario's 1,000th goal in Vasco da Gama’s Copa Brasil tie against Gama. But Romário de Souza Faria, the former 41-year-old PSV striker, failed to score and to the disappointment of the crowd, Vasco were even knocked out of the tournament, after suffering a 2-1 defeat, thanks to a last minute strike. The Cup tie had been switched to the Maracanã stadium especially for Romário.
The former Brazil striker will be rested next Sunday, when Vasco da Gama make a trip to Cabofriense, so it will take at least one week before he will get an opportunity to score his 1,000th goal in his career.
