Bonzi Wells Is A Jackass.

Bye, bye Bonzi?

That's a wrap. The Bonzi Wells experiment is over. The debate should be, too.

It turns out that after all this time, Bonzi Wells agrees completely with Jeff Van Gundy.

Though he decided to take one more look, Van Gundy had come to doubt that Wells could help the Rockets. Apparently, Wells agreed.

With the Rockets to play the SuperSonics on Monday, Wells gave himself the night off. He left Keith Jones a text message saying he thought he was a distraction to the team. (And this isn't?) He did not answer phone messages. And so rather than stop being a distraction, he decided to stop being a player.

His release could come within 24 hours.

After all these months claiming that he was pining to play, Wells decided not to. Just two awful performances into his return, he apparently quit.

The notion that Wells has played well in the past, while certainly true, really is not the point in April. A lot of guys played well in the past. There's a guy on Dancing with the Stars who played well in the past. In fact, when the Rockets brought him aboard, another shooting guard, Vernon Maxwell, similarly decided to pout and was dismissed from the second championship team.

Wells was not supplanted by a future Hall of Famer, as Max was when the Rockets traded for Clyde Drexler. And Wells certainly has not demonstrated the destructive nature of Maxwell. But less than two weeks before the playoffs, he benched himself.

He has not offered an explanation for this. His agent, Bill Duffy, had not heard from him and did not guess why Wells chose to hang around Seattle rather than get on the bus to the game.

A safe bet seems that he knew how horribly he was playing on Sunday, and chose not to showcase that for potential future employers. If that is the case, he put his own issues before his team's.

There have not been many practices in the past six weeks, and they are held behind closed doors, anyway. We can't say with any certainty that he looked the way he did on Friday and Sunday in those Toyota Center practices. It seems certain that if he was tearing it up, he might have been activated sooner.

Instead, this experiment will likely end with an appropriate whimper. It began with high hopes, understandable after Wells' outstanding, if unsuccessful, play in the playoffs' first round. Since then, he never consistently looked the way he did then. He offered brief glimpses. Nothing the Rockets could count on. Nothing that made him look like a player that could overcome how poor fit he was on a vastly different team than the one he mistakenly left.

During a free throw on Sunday, a fan shouted, "Bonzi, $3.2 million." Wells turned down more than that when he left Sacramento. Maybe he had spent so much time kicking himself since that taunt he was too sore to play Monday.

Or maybe, he finally came to realize, that he wasted a season in the short career of NBA players. He was too out of shape to succeed early, had injuries later, and walked out in the end. Regret can be heavy. It apparently weighed him down too much to show up Monday night.

He might not have to show up for a Rockets game again.

They've both eclipsed Ron Artest as the biggest morons to ever play basketball...But Spree's situation is worse. Bonzi at least claims he wanted to stay in Sacramento, but was somehow fucked over by his agent. :-X

I can't believe he's pulling these stunts now. How does he expect to sign with another team in the offseason after acting like this?!? I live in Sac, and know that a lot of Kings fans were bummed when he decided to not sign but I also know they're loving life without Bonzi. Imagine him providing this same less than stellar output on a team that will miss the playoffs after making them for 8 consecutive years, all while making $37 million. The fans would be even more irate then they are now. As someone who doesn't like the Kings, it would have been hilarious to see the daily debacle of Artest, Bonzi and Bibby.

it just seemed he was motivated as fuck when he was in Sac though. He put the whole team on his shoulders last year for their playoff run. Scoring, rebounding, flat out hustlin. You gotta love those type of players. Anytime you lose a player like that,as a fan your disappointed.

He did that ^ because he was hoping for a 8-digit-deal or something equally absurd. That didn't happen, so he was like  :-X :-\ :'( >:(
