NATIONAL CITY, Calif. -- National City officials have given up their bid to become the future hosts of the San Diego Chargers, but that doesn't mean they're not interested in having another sports team call National City home.

City officials have been talking with Ernie Hahn II, who operates the San Diego Sports Arena, about bringing an arena to the 67-acre bayfront site that the Chargers were considering, The San Diego Union-Tribune reported Wednesday.

Although no one would discuss details, Hahn said they would like the venue to house an NBA team, the newspaper reported.

The city's arena plans are preliminary. Officials need to secure financing, get buy-in from the Port of San Diego, which owns a majority of the site, and develop a land-use plan for the bayfront, according to the Union-Tribune.

Officials say they prepared to develop the site as part of their stadium proposal. They surveyed residents and business owners and met with representatives of waterfront companies, the newspaper reported.

Members of the Working Waterfront Group, a coalition of maritime-industrial businesses, opposed a Chargers stadium on grounds that it would harm their businesses. They also disapprove of an arena, Sharon Cloward, executive director of the San Diego Port Tenants Association, told the Union-Tribune.

Last week, after National City Mayor Ron Morrison announced the city was dropping its bid to become the site of a Chargers stadium, he said that "discussions with a number of people" about a sports arena were under way, the Union-Tribune reported.

Damn a San Diego basketball team would be dope. I hope it goes through and we don't fuck up like we did with the Rockets and Clippers.

I hope the Chargers don't move from Qulcomm Stadium (it's near my house). Espically some where outside the city. And a basketball team would be dope, San Diego's a huge place and should have a team, but I'd still be with the Lakers either way. 8).

Homie i live in Vegas and trust me the city wants a proffesional team for the last 10years.We have had alot of good locatation so they can build a pro stadium but only to be let down because of some new Casino or Condominiums.I personaly dont think Vegas will ever get a pro team due to the fact of the gambling part.I hate how our Mayor always teases the city about how they are  in talks to bring a pro team whether it be Baseball,BB,or NFL.He always says the same shit and we always end up losing to other cities for instance raiders going to Oakland,Vancouver Grizzlies going Memhis,Charlotte Bobcats and most recently MLB Toronto Blue jays went to Washington. Its fucking sickining and i just wish he would honestly shut the fuck up.DO you have any idea how hard it was to get the NBA Allstar tickets this year.Let me give you a clue you pretty much had to know somebody from a casino or from the NBA and they were fucking expensive for the the bad seats they were going at $500 easily.I just dont see it but i hope im wrong.

MLB and NFL is out of the question...But the NBA or the NHL will have a franchise in Vegas soon, mark my words. Whichever pro sport does it first will benefit the most, and I see David Stern taking that step...The NBA would be HUGE in Vegas, they are planning to build an arena on the strip...And it wont be an expansion team either, it'll most likely be a team on the move. Seattle, Sacramento, New Orleans, and Memphis are all possibilities.

I don't see a NBA team here in Vegas. Maybe baseball. And Goodman wants a arena downtown, the airport here is making a fuss about having it close by the strip and that would pump money into downtown like Colangelo did in Phoenix.

Baseball is the last sport that wants to be in Vegas...The MLB said they don't want their players attracted to the temptation of the city life, and lets not forget the gambling problems the sport has faced...Like I said, NBA and NHL are the two likely possibilities.

I don't think San Jose has a big enough market...I can think of other California cities that can use a team before San Jose.

True. NHL before NBA though. Unless Stern can be persuaded and they get around that betting thing. That is the only thing that really stands in the way. I really don't know if Vegas is fan wise ready for a pro team though. It would give tourists another thing to come out for so filling the arena should not be a problem but as long as they are winning who cares. It is when the team would be losing I would wonder if they would still support the team.

Yes NIK your right UNLV this year was surprisingly good and we definently supported them even thru the bad years.THey have been saying that they want to make the arena right behind down town because that would be a good location. That lot was empty about 5 years ago and all they have done to that big as lot is put up a mall,World Market Center (furniture displays) a government building and another building for conventions.I personlly think when they did this the last 5 years there was no way Vegas will ever get a pro team now.

UNLV has a in the closet fanbase that comes out when they go to the tournament. Vegas is a bandwagon city. They only started showing Rebel Pride again once they knew they were in the tournament. There are small pockets of diehard fans like any other team. UNR in Reno get more fan support then fans out in Vegas. There is too much to do out here, especially if the college is losing. Hmm go out to a club or see a show or go see UNLV play. If they are not winning, forget it. Before this season the Thomas & Mack was not even 1/2 full for their games. Same with football. And maybe that support would change with a pro team. If not they can always funnel tourists into the games to watch whatever pro team we get.

I promise you that a team in Vegas would be a cash cow.
