SNOOPS CAREAR-THROUGH THE YEARS-AN IN DEPTH LOOK

Snoop came into the game in 1992.  At the time, industry exploiters such as Russel Simmons, Puff Daddy, and Master P had yet to figure out a way to mass market rap music.  Rap at the time was generally restricted to the ghetto's of America, and to white suburbanites like myself, it was our best kept secret.

Snoop saw himself then as, "just another brother from the LBC."  He was yet to realize the impact of his lyrics, message, and lifestyle.  His style back in the Chronic, Doggystyle days suggested Snoop had a serious nearsidedness of his own self worth.  He rapped as if he was making underground tapes for his Rolling 20 set, and as if the percieved negative message in his lyrics meant nothing because he was "just another nigga from the hood" anyway.
His rhymes sounded real, and sounded as if he had just finished doing whatever he was rapping about.  

His murder trial and rap carear began making headlines and soon he found himself on the cover of Newsweek, selling millions of records, and being blasted by C. Delores Tucker, Reverand Butts, and other community activists.  Suddenly it mattered what this "nigga from the hood" had to say.  Suddenly people "gave a shit about Snoop Dogg."

Snoop then developed what we refer to as a conscience, and he's never been quite the same since.  Although he often shows signs of the brilliance he once posessed, his music is now less a statement on streetlife, as it is a statement on the serious turn rap music has taken for the worse.  

Rap is now a parody of a lifestyle that was real back in 1992.  Artists try to pretend to be what Snoop really was.  There is no bigger example of this than Shyne.  Shyne represents a generation of rappers that grew up listening to Snoop. Rather than living the gangsta life for themselves, they lived it through Snoops music.  Because of Snoop, "niggaz from the hood" may now feel a higher sense of self-esteem, and may realize there worth in ways Snoop would have never imagined when he was 19.  The world may be a more peaceful place than it was back in 92, which is ofcourse a good thing- but don't expect to see another rapper of Snoop Dogg's caliber rise up out the ghetto... ever again.
