What makes a song commercial???
« on: September 02, 2001, 12:30:20 PM »
My opinion is this.  If your video or song, seems more like a damn commercial than it does a song, then it's commercial rap.  Like that Fabulous feat. Nate Dogg song, "I Can't Deny It" is about as commercial as you can get.  It looks like a commercial for his album.
That's also why Jay-Z is a commercial rapper to me.  If you see a commercial for someones album, they play a beat in the background and try to tell you how great they are or how great their record is, and that you need to buy it, give them money.  Well what does Jay-Z do his whole album?  Just that.
There are many more examples but that's just a couple of video's I just saw, Jigga's new one, and Fabulous, so it was on my mind.

That video analysis is quite a good factor  ;D But i'd say there's alot 2 making a song commercial. It's comes down basically 2 the credability of the song, I mean something that they know will sell, catchy hook, radio friendly lyrics (if they're not they're either blanked or edited), it's basically how well it is marketed. To me, trying to make a song commercialised u try & aim it at everyone, not jus' a minority of fans. Well thats what I think anywayz.

I think that if you take one of the 'O's' out of 'Good' it's 'God', if you add a 'D' to 'Evil' it's the 'Devil'. I think some cool motherfucker sat down a long time ago and said 'let's figure out a way to control motherfuckers'.

704D, I feel what your saying, but I don't see what's wrong with making music that's for everyone.  Like a track like "Stan" by Eminem, isn't commercial, and people young and old, and from different countries and backgrounds can feel it.

Now this is a real gray area, but I also think that even if a song is commercial that if the beat is incredible, then it's music regardless.

I totally agree, I mean music is so universal now that it doesn't matter....but I'm jus' stating that thats what makes it commercial material as it appeals 2 everyone, thus giving it a more commercial appeal. Commercial ain't always bad anywayz....I mean "stan" has become a commercial success, it doesn't necesserily make it commercial material though. Some songs r aimed at commercial success, others jus' happen by, well "accident" so to speak. But you find with alot of artists that "accidentally" gain commercial success become dependent on that particular sound that gained them that success.

I think that if you take one of the 'O's' out of 'Good' it's 'God', if you add a 'D' to 'Evil' it's the 'Devil'. I think some cool motherfucker sat down a long time ago and said 'let's figure out a way to control motherfuckers'.

A underground song is made by a artist for HIMSELF, not for the public. Killah Priest never wanted to be radio friendly or girl-friendly, he just says what he feels, that's why nobody buys his shit. Jay-Z and Ja Rule write songs for the people, to give em what they want. It's just he who knows exactly what people want wins.

I be one of those tall skinny cats with the four-nine
Three-eleven that rips through Power-U's and breaks spines
I culture power-tuggin' boys who be drunk, buggin'
Lovin' loud noise from toys, club thuggin'
Sweet chocolate deluxe, rugged, sexy buttercup
That don't give a fuck about the cop in the club
