Laugh Now Cry Later, 1 Year Later
« on: June 06, 2007, 11:13:04 AM »

Today is 1 year ago that this album came out and I was wondering what was people's thoughts about it 1 year later. Plenty of time to bump it and make a call on it. The good, the bad, it's impact, whatever.

At first i was on the fence, because I thought Cube came correct but not all the beats were on par. Then I slowly grew to love the album as time passed and now i think it was the best West Coast release of '06 and one of the best releases last year.

IMO its his best album since Bow Down and should've erased all the "fell off" talk but unfortunately, its an Ice Cube album and waaaay too many people are hung up on expecting any DC or Predator.

Favorite Tracks: Nigga Trap, Doin What it 'Pose to Do, Spittin, Growin Up, Spittin Pollaseeds

Tracks it could do without:You Gotta Lotta That, The Game Lord

Damn, it's been a year already? Still think about that same as when it first came out (check my review in the review section) although most the tracks grew on me. Only 2 or 3 tracks that are skipable. All the other tracks are solid. I know it's Ice Cube, but it's pretty amazing how it was able to sell 500,000 copies independently. One of the best albums of 2006 (which isn't saying much).

I lost my interest in it. I saw it in iTunes just yet and decided to skip it, to me it doesn't have much replay value. I loved the album when it came out though, but i don't feel the need to listen to it again.

I think Ice Cube should have used other beats, there's definately some non-Westcoast beats on there that ruin it for me. Ice Cube = Westcoast OG so why use Scott Storch or Lil' Jon for your beats? He should have sticked with the Westcoast producers to give it that authentic sound to it, like Battlecat, DJ Muggs or QDIII. Lyrics are aight to me, nothing special though, he doesn't sound that hungry anymore, like a veteran looking back and thinking "been there done that".

It's still not a bad album though, 3/5.

Yeah I agree with you on the beats. Muggs and Cube made some classics together. Although I liked pretty much all the beats, I think for the next one that is a nice list of westcoast producers you gave to start off with.

Yeah just stick with the people that made your shit classic in the past. Imo Ice Cube should set some standards in the industry and do an album with 1 or 2 producers only. Like having a consistent album with just 1 or 2 people behind the boards, that hasn't happened much lately.

Man a DJ Muggs produced Ice Cube album would be incredible.

Yeah, even though a QDIII or Bomb Squad produced album would be incredible too.  ;)

Love Muggs style of producing though.  8)

Muggs is my favorite producer. I would like to see Battlecat, Muggs, QDIII, Bud'da, LayLaw, and maybe 1 or 2 more and that would be a bangin ass album right there. Even link back up with N.O. Joe from Rap-A-Lot.

i thought it was a pretty solid album, with just a few skippers. More consistent then the war&peace vol.'s. And shouldn't be a suprise to you xander to see him using storch, PLENTY of westcoast rappers get beats from dude

Yeah Scott has a very diverse style. He has made alot of west coast bangers in his time and Why We Thugs was the shit. Definitely worthy of being on a west coast album IMO.

Probably don't like it as much as I did last year, the album was very uneven. There's still a couple tracks in my Ipod rotation though 8)

IMO I liked the album. I thought even 20 years deep in the game that Ice Cube can top this album. I think alot of singles were more radio driven and had good success, but now that Cube has people's attention, I would like to see him create a album with a little bit more substance. I still rank it near the bottom of his catalogue but I did enjoy it. Alot of dope cuts on it.
