Don’t bother comparing LeBron to NBA’s old-school stars

Give LeBron James credit.

At age 22 and with a shaky supporting cast at his side, he managed to energize his hometown by leading the Cleveland Cavaliers to the NBA Finals for the first time.

He had a spectacular 48-point game against Detroit in the Eastern Conference finals. But don’t expect too many miracles from James just yet. And there’s no reason to bring up any old-school comparisons.

We may never see another NBA player reach the caliber of Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson or Larry Bird. Today’s stars are talented, but the quality of competition is just not the same now that players receive huge paydays early in their careers and many are lacking basketball knowledge they would have learned in college.

James is averaging 25.1 points, 8.2 rebounds and 8.0 assists in this year’s playoffs. Those are excellent numbers, but consider that Jordan averaged 36.7 points in the 1990 playoffs, then realized he couldn’t do it all himself and shifted to 31.1 points and 8.4 assists while the Bulls won their first title in 1991.

Sure, James is younger and has time to improve. But he’s also working against weaker competition. What NBA Finals team from the ’90s wouldn’t sweep a series against this year’s Cavaliers squad? OK, besides the 1999 Knicks.

James may very well become the biggest star of his generation. But this is a different era of NBA basketball and previous generations should be excluded from all comparisons.

If Lebron is playing a level similar to jordan one can only conclude that if he gets this series win over detroit it'll put him on the same level as kobe bryany who can't even win a playoff series by himself.
