Interview for my first job (help)
« on: July 07, 2007, 06:45:07 PM »
i applied for a job at target and they called me and said that ima have an interview next week.

What are some tips u can give me on my first interview for a target job.

Should i come wit a button up shirt and tie wit dress shoes.  or should i come casual (people say i look like a cholo though).

and what are some things their probably gonna ask me and how should i reply.

I really need a job so i wanna do this the best i can.

So anyone got any tips.

well i went for a workshop a few weeks back, here are some helpful hints:

study and research the company; like what chairities they give to, find out their company values / mission statement etc.; this'll show you have interest within the company.

when your sitting, don't cross your arms or fold them or anything; keep them on the chair's arm rests. from what i understood, when u cross ur arms it means u might have something to hide.

when you're leaving, ask them:
1) when will you be notified if you get the position
2) if they would like your references (assuming you have; if not, ignore it)
3) ask for the person's card
this also shows interest and that you want the job.

what to wear: dress shirt, dress pants, dress shoes; try going for a light coloures shirt and dark coloured pants.

arrive 10 to 15 minutes early.

questions they might ask you:

1) what are your weaknesses?
2) why do you want this job?
3) give an example of a time where you you had a disagreement with a supervisor  or somebody who is at a 'higher' position than you, and how you solved it?

for q1, use positive weakened; example, you can say "i am too assertive" (basically you can't say no) and then say how u are going to solve it (e.g. say you are working on communicating with others and understanding where your limits are).

q2, once again goes back to the compan'y values; i usually say something bout team environment's.

q3, use an example that had a good ending. for example, sya u had a small misunderstanding with a team member; explain the situation quickly on what the argument was about; and then how it was solved.

don't ask anything about the pay, benefits, your hours, etc. unless they ask you.

that's what i remember, there's probably more hints and stuff.

I got hired on my first job interview and fired 3 days later because "I lied in my interview" which is bullshit because they asked me if I'm a peaceful person not if I ever got into a fight.

coo.  for the question of "why do u want this job" could i just say something like "i shop here (at Target) and i really like the store and i thought this would be a good place to work.
or
I really need a job because im about to go to college and i dont have anybody to help financially.

and for question number 3 where it says what are ur weaknesses.  What should i as a 17 yr old at Target say. cus i dont really know about the whole assertive thing cus it sounds way to smart for me.

for the "why do u want this job" question, go with the "good place to work" one, just try wording it better. say something like "it looks like a comfortable work environment and I feel i would make a great fit within the company".

for question 3, just saya any weakness that'll put u down. so don't say something like "it takes a bit of time to learn things" etc.
you can probably say "i sometimes take on more tasks then i can handle" and come up with a solution for it.

alright.  I think ima use the exact same one u said for question number 3.

for the why do u want this job, i bet u ima get all nervous and say it like how u said not to word it.
Do u really talk like that wen u do ur interviews cus i would never be able to say something smart like that.

But i remember i was riding wit my cousin in his car and we are salvadorian and hes always cussing and using slang, but as i was riding wit him somebody was calling him so he picked up (it was for an interview  and for a good job cus he was dressed up) and he started talking polite as hell! and he was talking all smart and as soon as he hung up he was like "u see how u got to talk white to these people"

I need to start learning how to reword things ima say so that itll come off as more educated.  << i was trying to sound smart at the last part.

it's better to overdress for an interview rather than under dress

if you dont have a suit + tie, wear a nice business button up shirt (long sleeve) and some proper pants with dress shoes. putting in the effort is what will get you the job if all the people they're interviewing seem the same

the amount of people ive interviewed that turn up in jeans and a t-shirt is disgusting

Damn, I walked in with jeans and a Sean John shirt. :-\

Course, I wouldn't know if I got any call backs becuz the phones is fuckin' turned off, can you say fuckin' bullshit. ::)

On the real, I'd say be yourself. Don't be fake and don't try too hard. Don't even worry about the questions, cuz you know it's just gonna drive you crazy. Just know why you want the job, but of course I didn't know you had to be this dressy and 'ready' for a fuckin' part time job. You goin' for part time, word?

the way that i am is that i don't use slang in real life conversations anyways (well not anymore, i used to before but cut that down a lot).
during an interview, i basically talk the way i'd conversate in real life with other ppl (without the swearing tho); and because of my field of study (marketing) im usually able to come up with answers pretty quickly.

I NEVA HAD A JOB PURE CRACK HUSTLE NIGGAS, GET YOUR MONEY UP!
wurrrd

Actually, myself, I just got a job and it was too easy to believe. Since you're looking for a job in the USA and I got mine in Switzerland, there might be certain general differences, but taking that into account, here's some stuff I consider applicable to all sorts of job interviews anywhere in the western world:

1) It's good to turn up well-dressed, but you do have to come accross as natural. That is, try not to look like you're in these clothes just to show off or even for the first time. If you have never worn the type of clothes you're wearing, don't go over the top. Don't get me wrong, walking in with a G-Unit shirt and a 20-pound fake gold chain spelling your name dangling from your neck can hardly be an advantage under any circumstances, what I'm trying to say is don't look "disguised" and like you're uncomfortable with the clothes you have on. (Depending on the job/place, people might actually expect you to come dressed casually, at least in the society I live in, but that surely varies from country to country)

2) A formula very widely propagated around here for application processes is the "YOU-ME-US"-thing. This means, if you apply for a job - writing a letter/E-Mail, but also when interviewed - you're supposed to first mention what the company offers and then explain as eloquently and convincingly as possible why you are the person who would best fulfill their requirements and be, simply put, ideal for the job. So: "YOU" offer this, "ME", I can do it, "US", we would certainly get along well.

3) Be humble, obviously. That doesn't mean that you have to kiss ass, just accept the hierarchical structure of the application process: You want something from them and they have something to give to you, much more than vice versa; companies are not desperate to find employees these days, whereas many people are desperate to get a job. Always be very friendly and make sure to get accross that you'd be glad about the job. Also, be cautious about demanding things or inquiring about salary and similar things. Wait until you're informed about it. You won't have to sign a contract without knowing what you'll be paid, so don't push the issue.

4) Easier said than done, but try not to be nervous; or, if you are, try not to come accross as nervous. Know that your competition is in the same situation and don't worry if you failed to formulate something the way you'd planned to, because that happens to everyone. Of course, preparation is good, but know that it's impossible to get the interview done exactly the way you'd imagined. Nothing ever goes exactly as planned, accept that.

That's a few things that came to mind right now. Hope it helps.
