New Study Could Help Change Carpool Lane Policies
Restricting Carpool Lane Access Doesn't Improve Safety

GARDEN GROVE, Aug. 8, 2007 (KABC-TV) - A new study could make it safer and easier to use carpool lanes in Southern California.

The study found that limiting access to carpool lanes actually results in more accidents and allowing drivers to go in and out when they want to is safer.

It's encouraging news to officials in Orange County who would like to loosen up access to carpool lanes. The OCTA and CalTrans have had a pilot program in place since December that allows motorists continuous access to carpool lanes on the 22 Freeway in Garden Grove.

The study, conducted by researchers at UC Berkeley, found that restricting carpool access to the stretches of road with dotted lines does not imcrease safety. It also found that nearly 20 percent of collisions on restricted carpool lanes involve injuries, but that number is cut in half when drivers have continuous access.

Officials say that the experiment on the 22 has worked well, and most drivers prefer the continuous access.

The OCTA wants CalTrans to allow it to expand the policy to other freeways. Officials believe it will help ease congestion.

They would also like to implement rules similar to those used in some parts of Northern California that allow all drivers to have access to carpool lanes during off-peak hours.


Sounds cool...Though it might slow them up, and I sometimes like using a clear car-pool lane when I'm in a rush. Oh well, less chances of getting a ticket for me.

It's a lane on the highway where you can only drive if there's 2 or more people in the car...And it's shut off, so you can only enter/exit it every 2 miles or so...

Continuous access to the carpool lane is a great idea because too many fucking idiots have trouble merging in the alloted entrances/exits.

licenses need to be way harder to get, and if you are at fault for an accident your insurance should go up like 10x the amount.
