Manchester City star Craig Bellamy has been left battered and bruised after being attacked by a Man United fan.

The fiery Wales international, 30, suffered a black eye and grazed face during the attack last Saturday after City's 2-1 defeat at Hull.

The thug struck Bellamy outside the Panacea bar in Alderly Edge, Cheshire, where he had been drinking with pals, including teammate Wayne Bridge

An onlooker said: "He whacked him from behind and Craig fell to the floor. Bouncers jumped in straight away and the guy was carted off."

Police attended but Bellamy did not wish to press charges.

A source said: "He said he hit Craig because he was a Man U fan and Craig plays for City."

The incident comes after Bellamy was hit by a coin during the Carling Cup semi-final between City and United last month.

The Premier League are believed to be considering a proposal to introduce a play-off for the fourth Champions League spot.

Currently the teams finishing in the top four positions are handed entry to Europe's elite competition, either in the main draw or at the qualifying stage.

Now it has been proposed that only the first three be decided on league position and the fourth place be determined by a play-off.

That could mean the teams finishing in the positions fourth to seventh playing a mini-knockout competition.

Such a move would be seen as a measure to inject more competition into the league.

The same four clubs - Liverpool, Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea - have filled the top four positions in five of the past six seasons. Only Everton, in 2005, have broken their stranglehold.

The proposal is thought to have been raised at a recent meeting of all 20 clubs and will be considered again when they next meet in April.

The Premier League have not commented directly on the matter.

A spokesman said: "We look at all sorts of ideas and rarely make comment until we have decided something definitely."

If the proposal was to be voted on at any stage in the future, a 14-6 majority could be enough to see it implemented.

The idea may not be favoured by the established 'big four', who would obviously have the most to lose, but the idea is thought to have been enthusiastically greeted by some clubs.

Interestingly, the proposal has been raised at a time when Liverpool's place in the top four is coming under serious competition anyway from the likes of Manchester City, Aston Villa and Tottenham.

Nevertheless such an idea would keep interest in the season, even for clubs in mid-table, going for longer.

There are other factors which would have to be considered, however, such as how the play-offs might lengthen the season and how they could be fitted into the calendar. Determining Europa League qualification is an added complication.

Yer no doubt. But finishing 4th in the Premiership is a seriously good achievement if you are not one of the top 4 teams. Would be ridiculous if someone who finished 7th made it to the Champions League.

I don't think it'll ever happen because it'll cheapen the Champions League aswell and in turn cheapen the prestige of the Europa League as the three playoff losers will just see it as a 'wooden spoon' which it isn't. 99% of teams would kill to be in the Europa League. It always pisses me off when people say its a shit competition. Same for the League Cup.

Well, the League Cup is a shit competition, but it gives our u19 team a chance against seniors so I don't mind.
