I love XXL magazine and how they produce their end product. Shit is slick as fuck and I’m not just talking about the paper. The art direction and the writing are all of the highest caliber being used for any mag this side of the New York Times. So when Elliot Wilson displayed next month’s proposed cover in a drop he did I think a little piece of Hip-Hop just died. Having Lil’ Wang and BirdBrain on the cover is no real big deal. For a tenth anniversary issue it seems a bit underwhelming, but whatever is clever if it sells books I suppose. The only exception should be approving cover art that is flagrantly homostyle.

Not that there is anything wrong with being a gay or a lesbian, but shouldn’t the tenth anniversary of Hip-Hop’s current bible have a more O.G. hardbody appeal and less zesty swagger? Fuck Kanye or Cam’Ron or Consequence, put the Wu Tang up on that bitch and make that shit a collector’s item. XXL has the talent and resources to blow that URB cover of the Wu back to it’s Crayola inspired birth. And where is the rest of Cash Money and Young Money? These two yokels aren’t saving Hip-Hop by themselves, although they are giving some tattoo parlor a nice piece of change. I can’t blame Elliot Wilson one way or the other since General Electric has wild long money and they run this rap shity anyhoo, but dayum! Can we a least get a wifey B on these cartoon gangsters?

This ain’t no hate on Lil’ Wang either. Its just that I don’t even think he rates high enough for this important landmark cover. Fuck it, exhume B.I.G.’s body, bring Tupac back from Guatemala, give Snoop Dogg a blunt, hell, put a gotdamn throwback jersey on Jay-Z. Show me someone who changed the way we listen to rap music, give me someone that changed the fucking game. What game? Any game! Put Barry Bonds on the cover. Anybody but Lil’ Wang. Alright, I’m done complaining. Its only a cover anyhoo. In a month there will be someone else to grace the cover and XXL will continue to move forward full speed ahead.

How much you want to bet that this issue does wild numbers in the prison industrial complex?
