Groups that define West Coast music
« on: August 22, 2007, 04:32:21 PM »
I believe I'm going to incorporate a series of articles about groups that define west coast music into my 'Going off On Tanjints" column thing that I do.

First, I want to make a list of probably 20 to 30 groups that encapsulate California's sound and feel very well.

1.Sublime
2.Too Short and The Dangerous Crew
3.Rage Against The Machine
4.Cypress Hill
5.Bad Religion
6.Warren G
7.The Beach Boys
8.A-Team(Abstract Rude/Aceyalone)
9.Incubus
10.Living Legends
11.The Red Hot Chili Peppers
11.Dre/Snoop
12.The Eagles
13.Steely Dan
14. Mac Dre/Khayree
15.Tool/A Perfect Circle
16. The Mars Volta/At-The-Drive-In
17.Ice Cube/Sir Jinx/Crazy Toones/DJ Pooh
18.Cake
19.Daz/Kurupt the rest of the DPG extended family
20. DJ Quik
21.Jackson Browne
22..Above the Law
23.Jane's Addiction
24.Deltron the funkee homosapien, Dan, Hiero

Now I know alot of you are going to be tempted to start naming every rapper you like but before you do that let me say that being a dope rapper doesn't mean you shape the sound/your sound encapsulates the feel of California.

Sublime to me is the most Californian band ever, they have Reggae, hip-hop, funk, punk, rock, and every style in between and it all feels like cruising the beach or CA house parties you know? Warren G's albums feel like a sunset in Long Beach. Chili Peppers is a sunny day, bouncing along the city etc. Cypress Hill can encapsulate the mad stoniness of California life. Especially their early work with really gritty funk samples that feel like a funky yet gritty soundtrack to a funky yet gritty state you know? Don't just name every MC ever. cause MCing is probably a smaller part of the equation when it comes to a music's sound encapsulating the feel of California.

Anyway, just wanted to give y'all a little preview/head's up as to some shit I'll be writing on soon and I felt like making that list to make choosing songs on this mix I wanna make easier.

You're right, the alkies really do contribute to the sound of CA.

i'm not saying Bad Religion covers it all, I'm saying I don't know much past Bad Religion as far as west coast punk.

all those groups are from the L.A. area so yeah. plus I love them as well.

people ain't knowin' about steely dan. alot of their songs are blatantly about L.A. gangs and organized crime.
