WC - The Shadiest One
« on: September 04, 2007, 03:42:33 PM »
I was playing this yesterday, and I was thinking about how underrated it is.

Personally, I think it's the best album that anyone from the WSCG has released since Bow Down, and I think it's arguably his best album, with Curb Servin possibly being #1 or 2. I think this album is better than all of Mack 10's albums..and it doesn't sound nearly as dated as Bow Down, which is still a great album but does sound much more mid 90's than this album. I think this album may have been a year or two late, and if it had dropped when the West was still running the game, it may be more respected...but as of now, it only seems like a classic to those who are from L.A. and who are 21+, because young cats don't even know much about it.

The three singles were fire...."Just clownin" "Cheddar" and "Can't run away", along with "Hog" getting played on Theo's show on 92.3 back then. There aren't really any songs that I have to skip, and the album cuts were strong as hell.

I remember buying that shit when it came out, but I was so down on Hip-Hop when 'Pac died I bumped it like twice and traded it. My friend loved it, and he gave me Mack 10 Based on a True Story, which I bumped daily for a while... lol. So I guess each taste is different, going back and listening to both again, I'd say WC had the better album, but at the time I was feeling that Mack 10. The Receipt though was not so hot, never bought that one. But all and all, in 10 years... who's to say I wouldn't say my favorite album of that era (Post 'Pac - pre Dre2001) wouldn't be Kuruption!. I still bump That's Gangsta produced by Warren G.

I agree with everything you said except Bow Down sounding dated...I love the production on that album and to this day i bump it nonstop. It actuallyt doesnt sound like the albums that the West was droppin at the same time, so you cant really put a time stamp on it and say its 90s, imo it just as fresh today as it was back then.

As far as Shadiest one, its always been a personal classic, it could be the best solo from WSCG since Bow Down, although War, Recipe, and LNCL are extremely dope to me. But unfortunately its not surprising that Shadiest One is only really held in high regard on the west coast, and la in particular. Even Bow Down, which imo is one of the best westcoast albums ever, is completely forgotten in the rest of the country. Outside of Cali most kids under 21 havent even heard the album, let alone whether they like it or not. But Shadiest One will get props from almost anyone who listens to it.

I've never actually listened to any solo WC, but I've heard most of his material with the various groups he's been involved with (Low Profile, Maad Circle, WSC). I should get a hold of this shit for sure someday.
