So I have a laptop and it has a DVD Burner. I'm trying to send my cousin some of my DVDs since he's locked up and is able to have DVDs. So I'm trying to make copies of them. But it seems that nothing the laptop came with is set up for Ripping a DVD and then burning it (I'm assuming that's how it has to be done). Nonetheless, what do I need download/do to get this done?

Thanks in advance.

have a look at dvdshrink if you're using windows

it will rip the movie and burn it to the dvd. you may run into an issue with some dvds where they have gone over the normal 4.5Gb, and used a DVD9 disc, in which case you will need to remove menus, special features etc, and just have the movie

if you're on a mac, use handbrake

Just want to clarify, ripping means to bypass all the menus and bonus features and to extract only the movie and its main audio track, which is then compressed down to a smaller size at the expense of quality for distribution (usually) on the internet, your iPod, etc.

Whereas I'm guessing you're trying to backup and make an exact copy of the DVD itself?

For backup copies, you need a few blank DVDs. I'd suggest picking up a few DVD-R as they are more compatible with older DVD players. If you already have some blanks but they're DVD+R then test a few of the resulting copies out on your own DVD player to make sure they work.

The first thing you need is a program to bypass the CSS and content encryption on the DVD. Almost all DVD titles have this to some degree, which is designed to prevent a consumer from infringing upon and illegally copying these titles.

A program called AnyDVD can take care of this. It runs in the background at all times and will automatically remove most all types of content protection so that the DVD can be copied.

The other issue is the different DVD sizes. Several commercial DVD titles use Dual Layer DVDs, which can hold about 8.5 GB, where as store bought blank DVDs are Single Layer with a capacity of 4.38 GB. You could buy Dual Layer Blank disks but many retailer stores don't sell them and they're more expensive than Single Layer Disks ayway.

Thus you also need a program that can shrink a DVD down to Single Layer size if needed, either by removing unneeded features or discarding the video quality somewhat, or a combination of both. For this one of the better programs is called CloneDVD2.

Using those two programs the task is very easy to do, but they aren't free.

You could also use the tools outlined in this guide but it may be a bit more tricky.

True, but it hasn't been updated in years, making it obsolete on it's own if you're trying to backup newer titles with updated CSS. It also won't be able to burn anything unless you also have Nero installed.

For bypassing content protection a free solution is DVDFab Decrypter:

Then use DVD Shrink if you have Nero installed

Thanks for the help!

Can either of you hit me with a link for DVD Shrink? That was something I tried downloading earlier, but I seemed to get a corrupted version.
