Koch Looking to Purchase Death Row, Sale Held Up by Lawsuits
« on: October 10, 2007, 02:34:14 AM »
By Chris Richburg
The fate of Death Row Records continues to hang in the balance as independent record label Koch Records positions itself to buy the once influential West Coast rap label.

The New York Post reports that Koch is one of two companies who stand the best chance of purchasing Death Row.

The other company, Evergreen Copyrights, made its presence known in May by purchasing the writer's share of Death Row rapper Tupac Shakur's music catalog.

Although the music publisher and Koch are in the running to obtain Death Row, two sources involved in the process told The Post that the sale of the label remains stalled in light of outstanding claims from producer Dr. Dre and Afeni Shakur.

Dre's claim is over royalty payments pertaining to his classic Death Row release The Chronic.

Afeni Shakur's dispute with the embattled label involves the question of who owns the rights to unreleased music by her son Tupac.

Death Row controls the rights to roughly 10,000 master tracks.

In addition to the outstanding claims, the sources revealed that confusion exists among buyers as to what assets Death Row founder Marion "Suge" Knight still holds over the label.

The circumstances surrounding the sale and assets are latest in a series of events surrounding Death Row since the label filed for bankruptcy in April 2006, listing $137 million in debt and just $4.4 million in assets.

Sources estimate that Death Row will get less than $20 million on net revenue of roughly $2 million.

whats the confusion.....im sure suge will tell them everything they need to know after they bought the rights 8)

ok, let's say that koch buys death row, and that dre and afeni get paid, would that mean that more previously unreleased music will finally be released, or will koch set a new record for the guinness book of records for releasing so many compilations?

well technically the company stopped doing business  2 years ago(around the time some of suges millions went into hiding..lol)...and there are still albums getting released......so i dont think it will make any difference for the fans..maybe we will see something from the catalogue...suge had plans of releasing some shit from the vaults before he gave up the negative deathrow shit..lol.....and now koch will prob doing it(with suges blessings)...no big difference 8)

yeah i can read  ;) it's just that so many death row compilations have been released in the last few years, containing few to none previously unreleased tracks. sure, there's the for the people entertainment website, and maybe some other things that i don't know about, but that's not enough imo.

i mean, according to the source used in your first post, death row controls the rights of 10.000 master tracks! at least some of them could be released, without resulting in a court war  ;) all i want is koch to take a different route, and actually release some different material; so i hope you're right.

Hmm, it looks to me like Koch is maybe trying to position itselft as a "hip hop" Rhino Records...

If they can pull off the sale, and obtain good, creative, project directors, they have the opportunity to release stuff people have been wanting to hear for AGES now.

Me personally, i could wait a few years for those ultra unreleased classics to be released CDQ, along with that Chronic 92 instrumental record, etc...

hm, if koch gets the label they can release a bunch of stuff

but unless dre okays it, he has it in writing that DR, whoever owns it, can't release anything of his that ain't been released before or in a new form without his okay

so we're no more likely to hear unreleased dre shit, chronic instrumental etc. than we were before

but maybe without suge in the picture dre will be more down to let them release that shit if he gets a cut

I get a feeling that's why we didn't hear anything unreleased from the Deathrow Dre compilations... and I don't blame Dre, I wouldn't want Suge eating off my unreleased stuff either... Dre was a genuis to get those terms in writing...

Perhaps if Suge is completley out of the DeathRow picture, Dre would finally approve of those vault archives getting released

not so genius, it was after the break up. now if he got that contract wrote up before the break up....that woulda been genius.

still a good move on his part.

Yeah..I agree..it seems the majority of released Death Row music has been different versions, or OG/remixed versions of previously released tracks. I think what we really care about are all the mint tracks in the vault like the Dre/Cube songs, or Hit Em Up 2-3 ( i'm pretty sure this track never existed though, was just Suge tryin to get at Snoop)

I'm also not sure if DR has sole custody of the tracks in the vault, I heard there was a dispute over some of these tracks by the artists (Dre in particular), and because of that these tracks were like in no mans land were no one could touch them. Which sorta makes sense if you think about it, cause if all these tracks really did exist dont you think Suge is ass would've tried to make money of that shit?? Imagine if he dropped a DR collectors Item with Dre/Cube - Cant C Us and Dre/Cube - Gimme Feet. Can you imagine that shit, all of Cali would cop it.

True, but you have to admit that if any other artist left a label, all of that old material would probably be owned by the label he wwas leaving.

Only a mega star could propose something like that... any other artist, that request would've been laughed off
